【 GEMS ARE OVERRATED 】 || Brendan & Touko
“Ah- uhm, Touko … there’s, well, something I’ve been meaning to tell you.”
Bright sapphire eyes casually rose from the plate packed with food in order to study the boy before her. His dark chocolate hair was styled perfectly in a way that let Touko know he spent just as much time in the mirror as a typical girl did, with anxious forest green eyes that seemed to look at everything except at her. His tanned cheeks were flushed a light, rosy color that only made her more aware of his discomfort. His name was Kyle, a trainer she had met the day she arrived in Slateport City a week prior, and it was embarrassingly obvious he had a thing for her.
‘Well, here comes the confession,’ she thought blankly, sipping at the fruit smoothie he had graciously ordered and paid for as thanks for going on a date with him, ‘guess it’s time to break the news that I don’t have any feelings for him. Ah well, it was fun while it lasted. At least I got a lot of food out of this ordeal~’
A smile played across her face at the thought, her amusement hidden behind a pleasant mask which Kyle took as the go ahead to continue. A hand rose to his neck, pulling the neck line of the shirt away from him as if the already low cut rim was choking him. His body leaned forward slightly as he tried to build up the confidence to look her straight on. It was a few minutes before he was able too, and already Touko was less than impressed by him. She liked confident guys, who weren’t afraid to spill out their thoughts and feelings to her unhindered; but even so, she wasn’t looking for a relationship – she preferred the single life, with trysts set up here and there when she felt the need for male companionship.
“I know we’ve only been seeing each other for just over a week, but I -“
‘Seeing each other? More like you stalking me for just over a week.’
“- I think I’ve fallen in love with you.”
She had to suppress rolling her eyes at the cheesiness of it all. It was clear to see that Touko was the type of girl who was always ‘one of the guys’. It wasn’t like she couldn’t be feminine (on the contrary, she could be quite feminine when the situation called for it); she simply knew what she liked and didn’t have the time to play around with things she didn’t. Kyle was cute, she’d give him that, but definitely not her type with his egotistical, self-important personality (well, if she was being truly honest, a little of those qualities weren’t bad – she just didn’t like them to be to the extreme).
Kyle seemed taken aback by her nonchalant, almost bored response to his confession. He watched dumbfounded as she finished the last of her meal, sipped the rest of her smoothie, and then stood before grabbing her things.
“Sorry, but I think you’ve gotten the wrong idea about us. Thanks for the meal anyway! Make sure to treat me again sometime ‘kay? See ya~”
Kyle stumbled to get out of his chair in order to pursue the retreating form of the girl who had just rejected him without even batting an eyelash, but was quickly stopped by an irritated server when he tried to leave the tab not paid. Touko merely hummed to herself as she stepped out of the small café, the salty smell if the ocean welcoming her as she turned left to return to the heart of the city.
“Now then, what should I do now?”
