"I'm jealous."

The young man had been attempting to make an effort with themother of his child, spending time with her and getting to know each other, butit was evident in doing so he was putting a strain on his relationship withEli. He knew this would happen, Archer knowing it was near impossible tobalance two different worlds. Eli was his past and present, but Claire wasturning out to be his future. Or at least something along those lines. And itdidn't make things any less confusing when she had chastely placed a kissagainst his lips. They hadn't spoken about it, but seemed to have a mutualunderstanding of where they stood. Though, Archer wasn't entirely certain ofwhere that was. With a sigh escaping him, Archer sat curled up on the couchwith a book in hand, this being his typical Sunday routine. But what wasmissing was Eli sitting curled up by his side.

Idly flipping through the pages of his book, he found thathis focus really wasn't there and this was only proven when Eli walking throughthe room and barely graced him with a passing glance. He had been like this fora few days now and when Archer thought about it, this behaviour had begun rightafter his innocent encounter with Claire. Scrunching his brows together, it wasalmost too easy for Archer to put the pieces together. With a low sigh escapinghim, Archer placed his book to the side as he knew he would have to be the oneto show some initiative in this situation, less he allow for Eli to fade away.Archer never once stopped to think about a life without Eli, he didn't think hecould exist in such a world. Eli was the one that kept him grounded, but still,Claire could give him something the other male couldn't. He needed to findbalance with the two, but he couldn't really see any signs of a happy medium.

"Tell me what it is you saw." The question seemedto be drawn out of left field as the brunet walked after the other into theirsmall kitchen. "I saw your lips on hers." Eli was casual about hisanswer, but Archer knew there was more to it than that. "And you areacting like a child about it because?" Archer arched a brow, theconversation already putting strain on the young man. His brows were furrowed andhis lips drawn tight, the usual expression he wore when he was thinking toomuch. This seemed to happen on a daily basis. The answer he was given next wasnot one he had been expecting, the other male shrugging his shoulders andinforming him that he was jealous. Folding his arms across his chest, Archerreleased a breath as if to indicate the other was being ridiculous. "Youcan be ridiculous at times, you know that?"

"Who topped?"

"Why does everything have to be about sex withyou?" Leaning back against the counter, he nursed the bottle of water hehad retrieved from the fridge, matching the other male's mischievous expressionwith a stern look of his own. He should have been anticipating this, what withit being rare for Archer to accept the invitation to attend a date. There hadbeen a male in his class he had had a friendly relationship with since day one,but he had been surprised when the other male asked him if they could exploreother aspects of their relationship. For a young man that was considered to besmarter than most, he could be awfully oblivious at times. He had never beentalented when it came to reading the body language of others or seeing thesigns that were basically blaring red in his eyes. Archer had agreed to go onthe date, but it had not ended in the way Eli had assumed it had.

Running his tongue along his lower lip, he narrowed his eyesat the dark haired male as he continued with the process of getting on hisnerves. "He topped and it was great." He suddenly blurted out, hischeeks blazing with heat as Eli burst into a fit of laughter. Both males knewArcher was lying, Eli being one of the only ones that was really aware of howclose Archer needed to be to the other for any physical relationship totranspire. Archer had never given into temptation to the point where heencountered a one night stand. That simply was not who he was. At least at thisstage in his life that was what he could say. Eli often referred to him asbeing wholesome, like brown bread he would always add.

With a sigh falling from his lips, he waved the other boyoff as he exited the room without a word. It was often that Eli would get onhis nerves, but the frustration he felt never seemed to last for longer than afew brief seconds. Sometimes he looked at it as being a curse, but there wasnot much to be done about the matter. Lying on his bed with a book, as if oncue Eli entered the room with his sketchbook and took up residency beside Archeramongst the sheets. Archer didn't lift his gaze as the other breathed out anapology, the two boys not having to look at each other to know there was not asingle drop of bad blood boiling between them. "It's okay Eli." Henudged the other boy softly before he was returning to his book. The young manthankful that he had told his date there would be no repeat so he would nothave to ensure any further torment from Eli's tongue. At least not today.

They had told him not to stress over this happening, but ithad happened, he had been torn in two different directions. On both sides hehad his family, but he could only choose one. They could no longer go on livingin their delusional world where they could all coexist as one, Archer being theonly one who could see it all going down in flames. He didn't want to put Janethrough that so despite the heavy weight in his heart, he knew there were endshe would have to sever. For the majority of the day, Archer had been shut awayin his room, attempting to prepare a speech but nothing sounded right. Howcould he prepare himself to put an end to a relationship that had once meanteverything to him? Claire and Jane were his family, they were his future andEli, and he didn't want to say he was a piece of his past he was clinging onto,saying such a thing just didn't sound fair.

He had been quieter than he was on a normal day, which waswhy it did not come as a surprise when there was a knock at his door. He didn'teven have to open the frame to know who it was that was standing on the otherside. The one person he was dreading to face. Slowly rising from his bed, hemoved to open the door and the moment his eyes settled upon Eli's brightfeatures he could feel himself break. Tears welled in his eyes and any wordsthat had been forming had been killed in his throat. Instantly Eli's arms werewrapping their way around his frame and that only caused him to cry harder. Eliwas distressed over the state he had found Archer in, but the young man wasstruggling when it came to explaining why he appeared as if his world wasfalling to pieces and wasn't that exactly what it was doing?

Sitting on the edge of his bed, Eli prompted Archer to talkand all at once the words came rushing out of his lungs. "I'm breaking upwith you." The room then fell silent. Eli looked at him with disbelief; onlyasking what had pushed Archer to make such a decision after a few seconds."I can't have you both." Was all he could manage to say, Eli shakinghis head as he still did not believe what was being said. "You're notlistening!" Archer suddenly snapped as he rose to his feet. "Youshould be screaming at me right now, but you're just sitting there as if thisisn't happening! We can't be together Eli. We both know this. We've always knowthis. Claire and I are graduating in a few weeks, you have the coffee shop torun, and we have to move on with our lives." His tone grew soft, the youngman dropping his gaze. "It's over Eli."

It had been years since he had been home, but somehow he hadbeen talked into visiting his parents with his family over the holidays. Hisguardians had never played a great role in Jane's life, at least not while shewas an infant. Now that she was thirteen, his parents were realizing what itwas they were missing from their lives that were only now beginning to slowdown. Archer had been hesitant about returning to the one place he had sworn hewould never go back to after he graduated college. That was more than ten yearsago, but still, walking the once familiar streets brought back memories he hadlonged to forget. Everywhere he looked, he could see Eli, he could almost hearhim, wait, that was him?

He had been strolling through the grocery store, Jane havingrun off to another aisle while he picked up a few last minute items for dinner.Claire even being kind enough to make him a list since she knew how distractedhe had been the last few days. He heard a familiar voice calling his name, onehe had yet to forget, even after all these years. Turning around, therestanding before him was the same mop of curls he had once upon a time loved torun his fingers through. "Eli." He spoke with a professional edge,Archer not knowing how he was meant to feel in the current moment. He couldfeel his anxiety readily creeping up his spine, that being one thing that hadnot changed with time. "What are you doing here? Besides buyinggroceries." It was difficult for Archer to look the other in the eye, thetwo men not having spoken since Archer had ended things with him weeks beforegraduation.

He still did not know if he had made the right decision andhe had thought maybe seeing him again would show him the answer, but instead,he felt as if he had more questions than anything else. "Dad! I couldn'tfind the kind of cereal you wanted so I just got this." Archer sighed ashe watched his daughter drop a box of the most disgusting cereal possible intotheir cart. "Who is this?" Jane asked him as she peered over at Eli."I know who you are!" She suddenly exclaimed. "Mom says he wasthe first person you ever loved." Archer cleared his throat as he lookedat his daughter in a way that told her not to say another word. "I wouldlove to catch up, but I don't want to keep my folks waiting. It was nice to seeyou." As Archer guided his daughter towards the checkout line, he couldn'tstop himself from looking over his shoulder. Looking at what it was he had leftbehind.
