He is a study in indifference, lounging with a cup of wine and an indolent smirk, vulgar words thrown about with careless precision. It draws endless, eye-rolling disapproval from her nephew, and indulgent smirks or shock from the few courtiers who have met him. The Jianghu, they murmur, is truly a different world.
It is a performance worthy of an emperor’s brother, but she has seen him in the mornings, when he leaves her bed at first light to work or to train. She knows as well as anyone the labor that effortlessness requires, and his genius is effortless indeed.
