The Modern Day Bandaids
I'd like to think of the Downtown Dolls as a modern day form of Penny Lane's term, "Bandaids".
(I'm guessing we're all aware of who THEE Miss Penny Lane is, right? If not, netflix 'Almost Famous' already...thank me later!)
DTD are NOT groupies, we don't do things with the bands just to be near them. We actually like the music so much, or we are curious about this upcoming band, or perhaps that friend from back home happens to play drums in that one band...so we go and we support the band!
But never mistake us for a groupie...got it?
So we like our bands, and we've got some favorites for whatever reasons.
The first, and probably one of our all-time favorites, is Heypenny!
We go and see these guys (or at least some of us do) whenever they're in NYC. JT (that's me!) knows the dummer from her high school days spent drinking coffee in a booth at Denny's (and she's got a pretty funny story on his van, and a silly pick-up line, oh teenagers); while all her friends back home and in Nashville, sing their praises and energy of their shows...so she had to take the girls to see them at some point. And from that first show DTD went to as a gang, they were kinda sorta really into Heypenny's sound.
These guys are a colorful , eclectic bunch.
Good sounds...
Lots of energy...
lots of tv's on stage,
(which I always think seems like it must be really grueling to travel with those things on tour--they have them at every show! Props to you boys for hauling around around those visual aides! geez)
And always at every show...
my all-time fave Heypenny song, "CopCar"!
It's so catchy and upbeat and makes me shake a leg from time to time throughout the song.
Another band we've been wanting to see is
Cloud Nothings.
You probably have seen us boast about our video debut several times throughout the DTD history.
Our gang friend Allen hooked us up with spots in their video for "Hey Cool Kid". And up until last Saturday we hadn't had a chance to see what these guys were all about...we just knew we were in their video. So it was high time we get our tail-feathers over to Glasslands in Brooklyn to see them play.
These guys hail from Cleveland, OH...
one of them even went to JT's (again, that's me!) ol' college of Kent State University--so yes, you're right if you're guessing I probably yelled out "OHHHHHH-HIO" a few times between songs, and yes I also threw out the oldie but goodie:
Kent Read, Kent Write, Kent State
All-in-all the show was not bad; I'm glad we finally saw them play.
DTD will forever be remembered as the hellions on the sidelines of the basketball game in their video.
And Mess-Demeanor will forever be ridiculed for her flailing arms and running technique toward the end of the video where its sorta apocalyptic and end-of-the-world like.
Check it out, and see if you can spot what I'm talkin' about...and then look me in the eye and tell me you didn't laugh; its damn near impossible!
Any band suggestions DTD should check out?
We always like new music, we're open to just about any sounds, and we like to toss around our support like no other. And really, what band wouldn't love a group of cute girls in matching vests up front cheering them on and dancin' around?
Just remember, we're not groupies...we're a gang!
We just double as Bandaids when needed.

+ one last random pic cause I thought the ceiling looked cool!
Heypenny - Parade
"Mariay, you're in the bombs way. The whole parade, is in the bombs way."
Heypenny -- "Parade" I forgot about this song's existence until a few moments ago despite the fact that I probably listened to it seven million times (approx.) when it came out like five years ago and memory is a funny and fickle thing isn't it and I wonder what else have I forgotten over the years. Anyway. This song is just really fun.
LOL
