Obscure Video Game Villains! Spooktober Spectacular! The Creature
Name – Unnamed, referred to simply as “the creature” Occupation – Monster roaming the underground Status – Depends on which ending is obtained. Only Appearance – Hell Night
The creature is a mysterious parasitic life form that infects and mutates its host to fit its own needs. It was created in a lab, but broke free and killed the occupants of the lab. It later escaped and began traversing the subway station. A black ops team was sent to intercept it, but they were eliminated with little effort. Meanwhile, the main protagonist is fleeing a cult and boards a train, said train would come across the creature and the creature proceeds to derail the train. This kills most of the passengers besides the protagonist and a young woman. The protagonist and their new-found ally take refuge in a large maze of tunnels to escape. However, the creature pursues them endlessly. As they dive deeper into the underground, they come across an entire underground community. They cannot dwell for long, as the creature remains in hot pursuit. Almost as if specifically targeting the main character.
The creature is implied to be aligned with or have some sort of connection with the cult from the beginning of the game. The cult wishes to bring forth a “dark messiah”. A large otherworldly area deep underground, called the Hive is the last stop on our protagonist journey. Depending on the ending, the creature can be presumed killed when the hive is destroyed. While pursuing the player, the creature is invincible and very powerful. It can kill off the player in one or two hits. Depending on who the player is with, the player can fight back. If a party member has a weapon it can be used to stun the creature, but the creature will never stay down. The creature is mostly silent; however, it does make noise when it is alert to the player’s location or if it is within the vicinity of the player. So extra precaution should be taken when playing this deadly game of cat and mouse.
Hell Night, also known as Dark Messiah in Japan, was never released on American shores. It saw a release in the PAL (European) region though and has amassed somewhat of a following. Considered to be a hidden classic by some. However, it was still never released to the main audience of America and to this day remains a hidden game. Thus, we can welcome the creature to the hall of obscure villains!
