@phxhistory does such a great job of telling us some of the great stories of Arizona. Thank you! Repost @phxhistory Phil Dexter was a man with an impossible dream: he wanted to build a a gigantic wave pool in the middle of the desert. He built a scale model of the wave pool mechanism in his backyard and found an unusual investor: the Clairol company - yes, the one who makes hair and skin care products. Big Surf opened in Tempe, Arizona on October 24, 1969. The 2.5 million gallon pool generates waves 3 to 5 feet tall every three minutes. The impossible dream became a huge success and has operated for 49 years. It has hosted surf contests, concerts, and countless fans over the years. It's still there today! #phxhistory #hiddenphoenix #wavepool #bigsurf #tempe #igersaz #ig_arizona #igersphx #ig_arizona #instagramaz #explorephx #azgrammers #arizonaphotographer #myphx #azculture #capturearizona #weroamarizona #az365 #waterpark #waterparks (at Big Surf AZ)
