High scorers pay tribute to mums who inspired them
Being the children of a farmer or hospital cleaner did not prevent students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Jitra (SMKJ) from scoring straight As in the 2014 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM).
Nur Azira Ibrahim, from Kampung Jerlun, Ayer Hitam, and C. Sutarsan, from Taman Aman here, both 20, also did not let the odds against them from stopping them from scoring in the examination.
Nur Azira said her family’s poverty and the plight of her mother who worked in the fields to fund her schooling and that of her sister drove her to achieve excellent results.
The youngest of three siblings, she said her mother, Aminah Janai, 61, set great priority on education and provided for all their workbooks and extra classes.
Nur Azira, who aspires to continue her studies in accounting at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), said she and her friends often studied together and consulted their teachers if they did not understand anything.
Sutarsan said his success was a gift to his mother, M. Siyamala Devi, 44, who was willing to make sacrifices and work hard to ensure they got a proper education.
He said his mother, who worked as a cleaner at Hospital Jitra, often advised him to study hard to achieve success.
“I often spent time studying at the public library with my friends.
“Always follow mother’s advice which can motivate us to excel,” was Sutarsan’s advice to students who want to succeed.
He intends to continue his studies in Economics at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
