Cheap Isn’t Necessarily Good

I rarely by beer because it’s cheap. I avoid plenty of beer because it’s too expensive, but I don’t really seek out deals. But I was at McMenamin’s 23rd Avenue Bottleshop, and the guy behind the counter was pointing a woman looking for coffee stout toward High West-ified Imperial Coffee Stout from Lagunitas. It’s barrel-aged; it’s over 12% ABV; and it’s only $2.25 a bottle. 

My interest was piqued. I didn’t pick up a six-pack like the coffee addict, but I grabbed a bottle to see what it was all about. How can you sell a whisky aged stout so cheaply?

The first sip is pretty good, lots of smooth, chocolaty coffee. Then the High West-ification hits with a big wave of high proof whiskey. It’s hot going down. It’s not the pleasant boozy sweetness you’ll find in a strong quadrupel. It’s a hard alcohol burn. A shot of tequila, not a sip of scotch. It’s a punch to the gut. Lagunitas aged the stout for seventeen months, but it tastes raw and harsh. 

Maybe that High West Rye just isn’t very good. Bad whisky in, bad beer out, right? Even after I draining my glass, it still reeks of ethanol fumes.
