What we sought was a space to occupy pure joy, and a space that inspires the driver.

Designated as a seat to fully enjoy the sensory realm, the car features special equipment in areas visible to the driver, audible to the driver, and touched by the body. A dedicated sports seat allows for a precise driving position. The dedicated leather-wrapped steering wheel features grooves carved into the grip material to prevent unnecessary irritation to the palms, and is sewn so that the threads do not cross on the surface. The shift knob and parking brake lever are also made of genuine leather, providing a consistent feel with the steering wheel. The instrument panel and power window switch finishers feature a dedicated metallic dark-tone finisher that exudes a sporty yet luxurious atmosphere, tightening the overall feel of the cockpit. Stepper driven Mice generally have large and heavy batteries but does this have to be? Stepping Motors seemed to be a good choice, particularly as they were easily available and not particularly expensive. As an electronics engineer, I felt that I might be able to design a drive system that was both small in size and low in power requirements … which is incorporated into Isambard I." – Martin Barratt, Stepping Motors - they must be good for something, MINOS'07.

"At the 2007 Minos micromouse conference, Martin Barratt gave a talk about his stepper motor driving scheme. For best performance, steppers really need to be driven by a high voltage. However, the current will need to be limited to prevent the motor overheating. Normally this is done with dropper resistors which waste all the energy or with chopper drives that can be relatively complex. Martin has an alternative approach that provides the high voltage needed to produce fast step rates and the low current needed to reduce dissipation and keep the battery size under control. The essence of the method is quite simple. Stepper motors look like inductors to the driver circuit. The torque available depends upon the current flow through the coils but the rate at which the current can increase is proportional to the applied voltage. If you drive a stepper at low voltage and low frequency, it is perfectly happy. You will get adequate torque as the rise-time of the current will be a small part of the total step time. As you increase the step rate, there is less and less time for the current to rise and the torque suffers greatly. Simply using a higher voltage will result in the coils being over-driven severely. This will require a large battery and will make the motor overheat significantly. Martin’s solution is to have a two level power supply and a switch. At low speeds, or when the stepper is holding, the coils are supplied from a lower voltage. When a step is made, the switch connects a high voltage to the motors for a short period – long enough to get the current up to a respectable value quickly enough to ensure the motor responds quickly." – Peter Harrison, Bi level stepper driver.

Not the Last Gunfighter

The Chance Vought F8U Crusader was developed in response to a 1952 requirement from the US Navy for a carrier-based supersonic day fighter. At that time, aircraft carriers also carried specialized aircraft for night and all-weather flight.

The XF8U-1 prototype made its first flight on March 25, 1955, and easily broke the sound barrier in level flight, a remarkable achievement. This was the first time a US Navy fighter had broken the sound barrier in level flight. Chance Vought test pilot John Konrad reached an altitude of 10,668 meters (35,000 feet). It was immediately apparent that the Crusader was an exceptional aircraft, and in 1957, the prestigious Collier Trophy was jointly awarded to the US Navy and Chance Vought for its design and performance.

A production F8U-1 set an international speed record of 1,015.428 mph (1,630.7 km/h). In June 1957, two Crusaders took off from the aircraft carrier Bon Homme Richard (CVA-31) off the coast of California. After in-flight refueling, they landed aboard the USS Saratoga (CVA-60) off the coast of Florida, having crossed the continent in 3.5 hours. A month later, Marine Major John H. Glenn piloted an F8U-1P reconnaissance aircraft from California to New York in 3 hours, 28 minutes, and 50 seconds, for an average speed of 723.517 mph (1,164.7 km/h) – a transcontinental record. (Three times, Glenn had to descend from his optimal altitude and slow to 350 mph (563 km/h) to refuel from AJ-2 Savage tankers, but he still maintained an average speed of Mach 1.1 for the flight.)

The Crusader's designers faced the challenge of creating a fighter capable of exceeding Mach 1 and exhibiting good carrier landing capabilities. Their solution was to equip the Crusader with a swept wing that pitched up seven degrees on takeoff and landing to achieve the angle of attack necessary for a landing speed of 135 mph (210 km/h), while maintaining a near-horizontal fuselage for optimal pilot visibility. Once airborne, the wing blended seamlessly into the fuselage, giving the aircraft high efficiency. The outer wing panels folded upward for stowage on the aircraft carrier. (In very rare cases, Crusaders took off with their wing sections folded!)

A light day fighter—that is, without a radar intercept officer in the rear—the Crusader was powered by a single afterburning turbojet engine. The cockpit was located at the front, above the nose air intake.

Early Crusaders were armed with four 20 mm cannons, a Sidewinder missile rail on each side of the fuselage, and an integrated rocket launcher under the fuselage capable of firing 32 unguided 324 mm (12.75-inch) air-to-air rockets. On later models, the integrated fuselage rocket launcher was removed, the missile rails were modified to allow the launch of two Sidewinder air-to-air missiles each, and four underwing hardpoints were added to carry up to four 1,000-pound (454 kg) bombs or two Bullpup air-to-ground missiles. However, Crusaders were rarely used for attack missions.

On the F8U-1P Photo Crusaders, the four 20 mm cannons and their magazines were removed, fuel capacity was increased, and the nose was reconfigured to accommodate up to six cameras. The type and arrangement of the cameras could be changed depending on the mission. The cameras were controlled by an electronic system that allowed the pilot to take pictures manually or use an automatic mode in which the pilot set the aircraft's speed and altitude.

Deliveries of the F8U-1 to the US Navy began in December 1956, initially to various bases for operational testing and to the VX-3 development squadron. Fighter Squadron (VF) 32, based at Cecil Field Naval Air Station in Florida, was the first operational squadron to receive the Crusader, in March 1957, exactly two years after the prototype's first flight—another remarkable achievement. This squadron was also the first to send Crusaders into hostile territory when, operating from the aircraft carrier Saratoga, VF-32 flew over Lebanon during the Middle East Crisis of February 1958.

By the early 1960s, 32 US Navy fighter squadrons and 13 US Marine Corps fighter squadrons were operating the Crusader. Reconnaissance squadrons, as well as several utility and experimental units, also used it. Total Crusader production amounted to 1,261 aircraft, 42 of which were built specifically for French carrier operations. After their withdrawal from service, beginning in 1965, 375 fighters and 73 photo-reconnaissance aircraft were modernized, receiving new engines and other improvements, andreclassified in the F-8 series.

Crusader pilots quickly accumulated remarkable flight hours. The first F8U pilot to reach 1,000 flight hours on the Crusader was Commander James Stockdale, who served with VF-24 and VF-211 squadrons from 1957 to 1960. He would soon fly this aircraft in combat.

RF-8 Photo Crusaders, flown by the U.S. Navy and Marines, played a crucial role during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the fall of 1962, taking low-altitude photographs of the Soviet military buildup on the island. These flights were conducted under the command of Light Photographic Squadron 62, led by Commander William B. Ecker. No shots were fired during these overflights, which were conducted from bases in Florida. Less than two years later, beginning in late May 1964, Photo Crusaders, operating from aircraft carriers of the 7th Fleet, crisscrossed Southeast Asia to take photographs. These flights were conducted under enemy fire, and some aircraft were lost. The Crusader fighters were subsequently deployed over North Vietnam.

Chance Vought and its predecessors, which produced the iconic VE-7, F4U Corsair, F6U Pirate, and F7U Cutlass fighters, merged in 1961 with Ling-Temco Electronics to form Ling-Temco-Vought (LTV). Two seminal works on the history of the Crusader are Barrett Tillman's MiG Master: The Story of the F-8 Crusader (Annapolis, MD: Nautical & Aviation, 1980) and Peter Mersky's Vought F-8 Crusader (London: Osprey, 1989).

Glenn went on to become the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth (1962) and later served as a U.S. senator (1974–1999); he flew in space again while still a senator (1998).

Direct approach can bond and debond 2D semiconductors without any glue-like materials

A key objective of electronics engineers is to further reduce the size of devices, while also boosting their speed, performance and efficiency. Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, single-layer and thin materials with a controllable electrical conductivity, have been found to be particularly promising for the development of smaller electronics. In contrast with conventional semiconductors, these thinner materials could allow even smaller devices to perform well. However, the reliable fabrication of high-quality 2D semiconductor sheets (i.e., wafers) and bonding these sheets into precisely engineered stacks has so far proved to be challenging. Researchers at Songshan Lake Material Laboratory, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other institutes recently introduced a new approach to directly bond two 2D semiconducting wafers, without introducing any other materials between them. Their proposed method, presented in a paper in Nature Electronics, could facilitate the future development of highly performing transistors and various other electronic components based on 2D semiconductors.

2001 BMW X-Coupe (Concept)

Development and Origins

Based on the first-generation X5 (E53) platform, BMW had created the 2001 BMW X-Coupe as a design and technological study to explore new directions for the brand’s future lineup and to push boundaries between traditional categories. Unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2001, it previewed ideas that would later influence models like the Z4, X6 and the broader “Sports Activity Coupe” segment.

Exterior

The X-Coupe’s most striking element was its bold and provocative angular design language that featured sharp, slashing character lines and dramatic Flame Surfacing with its concave and convex surfaces that created high visual tension. This gave it a fastback roofline and heavily raked rear window that delivered a coupe silhouette while retaining SUV ground clearance and proportions.

At the rear, wide fenders, integrated exhaust tips and a subtle diffuser added a sporty edge. The body sat on 20-inch wheels with low-profile tires giving it a lowered, dynamic stance that reinforced its sporty coupe identity.

Other unique details included frameless doors, an asymmetrical rear hatch, a panoramic glass roof and hidden rear door handles for a cleaner two-door look. The concept had no B-pillar which emphasized open space and visibility. It measured 183 inches (4,654 mm) long, 74 inches (1,880 mm) wide and 61 inches (1,550 mm) tall, with a wheelbase of 111 inches (2,819 mm). The original steel body panels were eventually removed and replaced with lightweight aluminum panels which brought the curb weight down by approximately 450–600 lbs (204–272 kg) to around 4,400 lbs (1,995 kg).

Powertrain and Performance

Under the hood was a modified 3.0-liter turbo-diesel inline-six (M57D30 engine from the 530d/330d, with common-rail direct injection) producing 184 hp (137 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm) of torque. Power went to all four wheels via a five-speed Steptronic automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. It was capable of 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in around 7.5 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of around 125 mph (201 km/h).

BMW had fitted an adjustable air suspension with multiple ride height settings for on-road agility and light off-road capability. The concept also featured active steering and dynamic stability control systems which were rather advanced for 2001.

Interior

The cabin had a driver-focused layout with sport seats upholstered in leather and Alcantara. It’s speedometer and tachometer were in their usual place ahead of the steering wheel while the fuel and temperature gauges were mounted on the fore of the driver’s door panel. The center of the dashboard appeared to overflow toward the center console creating a definitive boundary between both front seats. The dashboard 'flowed' all the way to the armrest where an early iDrive controller was mounted in front of it.

Materials included brushed aluminum accents and high-quality leather throughout. Its bold, angular and minimalist design echoed the exterior’s Flame Surfacing with its sculpted surfaces. Its panoramic roof flooded the space with light and emphasized open space and visibility. Rear seating was limited to two individual buckets with a small cargo area behind.

The X-Coupe never entered production but it did have a lasting impact. It directly inspired the BMW X6 (launched in 2008) and helped to define the “Sports Activity Coupe” category. The concept also previewed styling cues that appeared on later models like the Z4 coupe and certain 6 Series variants. Today, the lone X-Coupe is preserved in BMW’s heritage collection and occasionally appears at special events.

Here’s my take on elemental magic systems. Usually I like having powers but they should come at a cost somehow. Yes you can learn it or use special items. But when it comes to casting spells. It should take some kinda toll on your body. Or even cause major injuries/chronic issues if use unsafely. Why can’t everyone just use magic? Because it can a dangerous tool that requires years of practice in order for your body to withstand it safely.

So here’s my lore dump

Elemental magic in alignment world is tied to one’s emotions/mental state. These emotions can both be negative or positive. Overtime the elements can physically affect the person not only mentally but emotionally. This can lead to people either embracing their magic, or falling to it.

Each type of magic needs both a physical/mental source of fuel. Most of the time, it involves a particular emotion but it can also include literal food in your stomach, muscle mass, mental energy and sometimes even memories

While there’s a variety of magic types, I’ll only talk about the 3 main ones. Lightning, fire, and water

Lightning

Lightning magic stems from the fear and the instinct to survive. Electricity in your body will react to make your stronger, faster. The adrenaline rush of when you’re in danger. Imagine this but take it up a notch. Through various means you can generate energy in your body to shoot our electricity or control your adrenaline to be temporary stronger or faster.

Side effects:

However, using this magic can result in a high tensed sense of anxiety/fear, your heart rate will increased, ADHD might be present, perception of time might feel slower than usual. Your body will also be of high risk of paralysis if the magic is used too much.

Panic attacks are also not fun with lightning magic. When your body is overloaded with magic and electricity your brain and body will be overwhelmed to a point it cannot function properly and you will think you are dying.

Lore

As long as you balanced your mental and physical health along with your magical use, you’ll be fine!

Lore wise, lightning magic is a tool that isn’t used often. Given the physical risks and lack of electronic based technology. The rare few who do practice this magic are often wealthy or desperate enough to get the speed boost to escape.

Lightning magic mixed with water can be used to form storms but I’ll cover that in a bit

Fire

Fire magic stems from anger and passion. The drive to create, the drive to change. The frustration towards a higher power or the wrong order at wackdonalds. Fire magic is more basic compared to other elements. You can create fire, use it like a flamethrower. Your body naturally runs hot and slowly it develops to be more resistant to heat. On a higher technical skill, you can also control the intensity of preexisting flames and can alter flames so they don’t cause burns or even light, or you can heat up specific items without lighting them aflame.

When you create magical fire, you must use something as fuel. This can be a physical item like wood, but in order to control it the fuel must be mental. Physically energy is the most common fuel, as well as emotional energy.

To create certain effects, specific emotions or even memories must be triggered. Depending on the emotion, it creates different effects

Anger/frustration: very blatant. Can increase the intensity and temperature of a fire.

Nostalgic: Can warm up item to a small degree, not to burn. It often smells sweet. Can also make fire not cause burns. Is used in cooking/baking. It’s the safe kind of fire. And one often used around kids when teaching magic at a young age.

Passion: very colorful, can alter the color of fire and also it’s size and brightness. Often used by performers.

Keep in mind not all of these categories are completely seperate. The types can easily overlap. The temperature of a flame can alter the color. The flame can become brighter but also not cause harm.

Sideffects

Burnout is the most common illness that takes place. Your body is overheated and is just exhausted.

Genuine burns are also a common thing that happens, it is fire after all.

If left unchecked, their body can be dry, if not thin a frail. Magical fire also fuels on muscle mass. Plus fire is also execptionally dry. So get some lotion.

Also depending on the “fuel” you use, that emotion, you’ll feel on a more constant basis. You might feel more frustrated than usually at smaller things. Suddenly passionate and enthralled in oridinary/repetive tasks. You feel nostalgic/bittersweet towards every item that reminds you of the past.

Lore

Fire magic is one of the most common forms of magic and can even be taught at a young age with a lot of adult supervision. Fire is a necessity for life after all! It’s often a wizard’s first spell, casting a small flame or creating light.

Water

Water magic stems from grief, saddness, but also calm. Specifically staying calm in times of crisis.

This type of magic that can’t physically be create. The spell “create water” is more “transform into water.” Snow will melt, steam will cool, and water from other sources will gather where you want.

Magic is less creating, more manipulating what’s already there. While emotions do play a role in harnessing this kind of magic, it’s not as strictly needed given you aren’t creating that magic.

It doesn’t mean there isn’t any consequences

Sideffects

Dehydration is very common. Part of the water in your body is used when casting spells. So make sure you have a water skin at all times! It’s also common to be teary eyed or sweaty. Your body constantly making water just in case you need to use it. Mental health is also a pretty big thing. Since this magic can stem from grief and sadness, this type of magic can tend to consume you if left unchecked.

Lore

Though not as popular as fire magic, water magic is quite common among coastal towns. I mean the ocean is literally right there! Ironically sailors don’t use it given it leaves the user rather dehydrated and unless you’re extremely skilled, you can’t immediately control the tides/waves. Besides, it always a good idea trying to control what beneath the waves. They aren’t too friendly

Mixing magics.

Magic isn’t completely catagorized and separated. Like emotions, there’s overlap. And magics can be combined to create different effects. Leading to several combinations.

Water+lightning=Storms

How to you combine fear and sadness! A stormy mess! While weather spells/rainstorms can be used with only water magic. If you want to make a thunder storm, you use both magics! (This is the magic Jasmine uses)

Water+Fire=steam/winds

Winds basically stems from differences in temperatures. So by combining these 2 elements, you can create strong winds and produce steam. Steam is pretty painful it the temperature is high enough.

Fire+lightning=explosions

Things go boom. Use wisely

Kintaro 'Restoration's Sword'

Overview:

Introduced in 2587 for the SLDF, the Kintaro was designed with one sole mission: tagging enemy units with a Narc Missile Beacon. As such, it is a 'Mech that is intended to work in a team with a missile-heavy lance. Put into production during the Third Succession War for the Federated Suns by General Dynamics of Ozawa, the downgraded KTO-18 Kintaro was manufactured using the Succession Wars era technology available at the time.

Capabilities:

This personalized one-off Kintaro variant was specially produced for High Lady Kamea Arano of the Aurigan Coaltion by Xerxes Truscott of the Fursona's Fusilier's mercenary company. The refit saw a complete tear down and rebuild of Kamea's original KTO-18 with (at the time) completely unknown technology.

While heavily modified from the original design, after its refit the 'Mech possessed much the same weapons loadout as before - save for the LRM launcher having been removed and replaced with a PPC of a range and energy output never before seen in the Inner Sphere. Indeed, the 'Mechs pair of medium lasers had their maximum range increased by nearly seventy percent, while putting out nearly the same power as a large laser. In addition, the SRM 6 racks were replaced with significantly upgraded models that exhibited a curious behavior - they did not fire until the tracking system achieved a positive lock with every missile in the salvo, and thus saved ammunition and increased hit probability to a perfect 100 percent. All the non-missile weapons were assisted by a compact targeting computer (loaded with variable range targeting software) in addition to custom accuracy and heat dissipation tuning done on each individual weapon.

CASE technology was somehow integrated into the newly added 9.5 tons of ferro-fibrous armor that protected a custom endo steel chassis. Meanwhile, numerous components were heavily armored, including the cockpit, which had a large amount of additional external armor protection installed. An advanced XL engine of a smaller class than the original was added along with a supercharger. While the 'Mech did run 5 tons overweight (primarily due to the decision to up-armor the new engine), the combination of the supercharger and lighter chassis and armor ensured that the 'Mech's top speed and general performance was unaffected. Twelve advanced, compact double heat sinks replaced the original single models, and ensured that the Kintaro's infamous overheating issues were almost entirely solved.

Finally, the 'Mech boasted advanced, lightweight electronic countermeasures and active probe systems, seemingly based on the lostech Guardian and Beagle systems of the old Star League. Additional communications, sensor, and targeting improvements were also made to the 'Mechs software suite. The 'Mechs hands were reinforced for potential close quarters encounters, the actuators of the 'Mech given additional protection for urban fighting, and its torso rotation range was increased. An advanced life support system with numerous backups was added, customizable controls allowed Kamea to personalize the layout of the cockpit, and the use of smaller and lighter components increased available space inside the cockpit, rivaling a Thunderbolt or Atlas - this increased space was complimented by luxurious pilot comfort systems, all fit and finished for a noble. Finally, the B-2000 battle computer from a damaged Restoration Army Cyclops was installed, to allow Kamea to coordinate large scale operations from her pilot seat.

Deployment:

Kamea's Kintaro, dubbed 'Restoration's Sword', would deploy on numerous operations during the Aurigan Civil War, before and after its refit. It was present and fought at Kamea's hands to escape the Aurigan Directorate coup in 3022, and Kamea continued to train with it while in hiding. After its refit in November of 3024, it took up arms on Weldry in December, and continued in her service thereafter.

After the refit, the 'Mech was classified top secret, and no one outside of Argo mechbay staff and a bare handful of extremely well-veted royal household technicians were allowed to work on the 'Mech, and questions about the new technologies were brushed off by claiming the technology was recovered from a derelict Star League JumpShip, or later that it was retrieved from Castle Nautilus.

While these explanations served to mollify many, most intelligence organizations such as MIM, the Maskirovka, DMI and even ComStar were never fooled, even if they could not gain direct access to the 'Mech itself. It would not be until almost exactly a quarter century after the Aurigan Civil War ended that the wider Inner Sphere would learn the true origin of the many of the 'Mech's advanced technologies.

History:

While Kamea famously switched to a customized (and somewhat more mundane) Atlas II in the later stages of the Aurigan Civil War, she retained 'Restoration's Sword' in her personal stable, under heavy guard in all non-combat circumstances. The 'Mech would continue to serve the Aurigan Royal Guard even into the 32nd century, where it was often seen at the hands of 'The Mastiff' - the unofficial rotating title granted to the current chief bodyguard of the ruler of the Coalition.
