After a bunch of messing around trying to build a decent technology suite, by break would come when I hired the Juiced Cosmonauts, who are very useful for navigating the Jupiter system because they can dare the risky slingshot maneuver that acquires Jupiter's moons. I used them and some good robonauts manufactured on Sylvia to get a factory set up on Europa, and my bernal parked in orbit. Unfortunately once you're on Europa, the resupply run from Earth is pretty brutal and expensive, so further exploration needed to be powered by components built nearby. Io is relatively easy to get to and metal-rich so a quick hop over there sets up a complimentary factory, and we're finally starting to get some traction. I bought the HIIPER Beam-Rider freighter tech, which is a cheap, low-mass transport that can ride power beamed from Io. It can score big points for a Future if I can set up a system for sending interstellar robotic probes. I have all the tech I need to pull it off after doing the promotion at my lab in orbit around Europa, so I load it all on the freighter and dispatch it towards Sedna, the remotest site on the board. I underestimated a bit how long it would take to get 120 tons of equipment that far out, and the game would end before I got there (he had the SETI future, which involves getting factories set up in both groups of Jovian Trojans - clusters of asteroids that live in the same orbit as Jupiter, in Jupiter's LeGrange points). This was long - about 8 hours! - but super-fun. I think a little experience will actually trim quite a bit off the playing time, but it is a bit of a monster. The game nominally supports 5 players, but I really don't think you want to go more than 3, generally. The game can play pretty fast if you know what you're doing; when we were first blundering around with High Frontier games took about 5 hours, but after we figured it out we could play the basic game in 2. But just one slow player can really kill you. #sierramadregames #highfrontier #bgg #boardgamegeek #boardgames
It’s been ages since I played High Frontier! A friend is leaving the area soon and wanted to get a game in before she left, so I did a teaching game for her and another friend. I learned this from the 1st edition rules back in 2010, and it wasn’t easy for sure, but actually wasn’t *that* complicated. So I had underestimated a bit how daunting the 3rd edition rules are, between bad layout, presentation, and ordering; too much included complexity from Colonization modules that is unnecessary and confusing; and the additional (slight, but not trivial) general complexity bloat. It’s a hard game to teach, but now it’s even harder to learn from the rules. But! It was still really fun to go back to this classic, and the basic game is both still good, and playable in a totally reasonable amount of time (3hr). Do keep the player count down though. Our game was bonkers, with the first three prospect die rolls on 1-size worlds (including Deimos) all succeeding. I warned them that next time they play they’ll be driving around the solar system blowing prospecting die rolls for a couple hours. Anyway, High Frontier is absolutely a niche game, but I also think it’s a total classic, and the 3rd edition modules (colonists, epic goals, freighters) all dramatically extend the replayability of the game by giving it a lot of variability. Looking forward to seeing what the upcoming 4th edition holds. #sierramadregames #phileklund #highfrontier #epicboardgames https://www.instagram.com/p/B7PLmYQhfPc/?igshid=1xy5gvr86k7ma
The goal of colonising space and the #highfrontier has always been about increasing the quality of life for the many. It was always a worry for Gerard K O'Neill that cylinders would become a playground for the rich much like it was in the film #elysium which is where this images is from. Thankfully the abundance that comes with increasing land area and power availablity will counteract these tendencies. . There will be a varying degree of greed and egoism undoubtedly in the first steps undoubtedly especially with the wealth available in asteroid mining but we must continue the traditions of the Outer Space Treaty and the Deep Space Treaty. . . . #spacehabitat #spacestation #spaceistheplace #space #sciencefiction #science #robot #robotics #science #scifi #spaceship #spacetravel #oniellcylinder #equality #liberty https://www.instagram.com/p/BxmiPE3H1Z2/?igshid=1i7s07hxeow0

Breaking in High Frontier, 3rd Edition! We are all veterans of High Frontier, so we went all-in - bernals, colonists, gigawatt thrusters, the whole 9 yards (the hardest jump is actually from the basic game to supports; once you've mastered that, the rest isn't too hard). Josh went the easy route of going to Ceres first; I had a suite of good tech I could build on metal asteroids if I could find one, but my prospecting rolls were bad so I had to settle for the carbonaceous asteroid Sylvia. It has a little mini-system with two other tiny asteroids which are a pain to exploit because of the rapid rotation, so I'd get some tech built and move my bernal into position, but aim to get the heck out of there ... #boardgamegeek #bgg #sierramadregames #highfrontier #highfrontiercolonization
Look what finally came! Looks really great - huge mounted map, nice rules tweaks, great to have everything (basic, advanced, colonization, interstellar) in one box. Looking forward to actually playing it :) #bgg #boardgamegeek #sierramadregames #highfrontier
