I want to thank Clarke Cadzow and the entire staff at Highland Coffees for allowing me to come into the shop and photograph it and its customers. Clarke remains my very good friend to this day, and the friendships built among my coworkers are some of the most meaningful friendships in my life. My wife Jennifer Wise Moroux (@jennifer.wisemoroux ) and I met working there, and Clarke was a groomsman at our wedding. Highland Coffees almost closed in 2014 when the landlord unexpectedly decided not to renew the lease, and I promised at the time that if I ever got the chance to commemorate Highland Coffees that I would. Shortly thereafter in late 2014 a groundswell of local support for Highland and Clarke contributed to the landlord changing course and renegotiating the lease. Not all customers at Highland Coffees drink coffee and tea. Here, employee Camille Boechler (@calvinkleinwhaletail) serves ice-cold chocolate milk to customers. Although Highland Coffees dedicates itself to top quality coffee, teas, and ambiance inside the shop and outside in the courtyard, Clarke Cadzow emphasizes that the cornerstone of his business is customer service. There is no more important factor in what makes Highland Coffees the special place that it is. Highland Coffees also offers seating in its three tiered courtyard that is landscaped with many different varieties of plants and flowers. The courtyard’s pergola is topped with a jasmine plant whose root wraps around one of the pergola’s posts and travels into the soil. #pursuits #highlandcoffees

Highland Coffees opened in 1989 at the corner of Highland Road and State Street, and in the mid-1990’s it relocated to the 3,000 square feet space where it sits today. The main seating area includes two triptych paintings by a Baton Rouge local artist Elizabeth Pratt. She presently lives in New Orleans. The main seating area also hosts revolving art shows that feature different local painters, designers, and photographers. #pursuits #highlandcoffees
