16th November 1724, execution by hanging of notorious English thief and prison escapee Jack Sheppard, “Honest Jack”. Becoming a popular folk hero in early 18th century London, Sheppard was arrested five times in 1724, and escaped four times from the prison he was held in. His two year stint of crime, arrest and escape, made him a local folk hero to the poor. Known for his association with the notorious highwayman Joseph "Blueskin" Blake, and the "Thief-Taker General" Jonathan Wild, Sheppard was caught for the last time, and hanged at Tyburn on this day; his attempt to escape again thwarted, when the prison warder found his concealed knife, and his fate was sealed. Due to his folk hero status, it is estimated that his procession to the gallows was witnessed by 200,000, a third of the population of London, at the time. His life story and tales of his crimes were sold at his execution, and are now thought to have been ghost written by Daniel Defoe, who also wrote ’The History of the Remarkable Life of John Sheppard, retelling the belief held in Newgate Gaol that the Devil himself had assist Sheppard's multiple escapes. After hanging from the rope for 15 minutes, Sheppard expired from strangulation, where upon the crowd surged forward to stop his body being sold to the anatomy schools. The crowds throng also prevented his associates who had planned to cut him down and attempt to revive him with the aid of a Doctor. 11th November 1724, execution by hanging of Joseph Blake, alias "Blueskin", a notorious highwayman and thief, who operated in the early 18th century London underworld. At his trial he slashed the throat of his acquaintance and the man he had brought him to justice the self styled "Thief-Taker General" Jonathan Wild. Wild was both a thief himself and also a self styled crime fighter, secretly running a gang of thieves and then when the opportunity presented itself turning in these same thieves to the authorities the next day, and receiving the reward for their capture. His duplicity was by 1725 discovered and he himself was hanged. Highwayman were both celebrated and reviled in different parts of society in the early 18th century. The first use of the term highwayman dates from the early 17th century, the same period where the famous highwayman demand to ‘Stand and deliver!’ also originates. Other terms used for highwayman include ‘knights of the road’ and ‘gentlemen of the road’, alluding to their romanticisation as popular folk heroes. Other notable figures include, Jack Sheppard, "Honest Jack", a associate of Joseph Blake, John Rann, "Sixteen String Jack" and the most well known, Dick Turpin, whose romanticized exploits (though fictionalized), were the subject of Victorian novelist William Harrison Ainsworth’s 1834 novel ‘Rookwood’.
