Yoo I seriously want to see some discussions surrounding why we wear the hijab/use to wear it with women who are actually in the Muslim community, instead of always having to be on the defense against white feminists. Their perspective usually comes from a place of superiority and having a lack of cultural nuance, but we need to still ask oUrselves these questions.
Why do we wear it? Why don’t we care that the men do not practice the same level of modesty as the Quran instructs? Isn’t modesty universal?
And most importantly, is it really a “choice” when our entire community looks down upon those who choose to not wear it? Is it still a choice if every single female member of your family wears one and tells you that it is essential to womanhood?
I know everyone comes from a different Islamic/ethnic background that holds it’s own versions of duty regarding the hijab, but I can genuinely say having come from a multi-ethnic mosque (malaysian, desi, arab, persian, east african, north african, you name it) that there seems to be a prevailing trope of deeply embedded duty to wear the hijab regardless of a woman’s own personal beliefs.
