New Year’s Day hike

It’s become sort of a New Year’s Day tradition for me to hike up to a certain landmark - a wayside shrine - on the first day of the new year.

Overall the weather is far too warm in my country. It is said that it is the warmest New Year’s Day since the beginning of weather recording. But the valley I live in is different - due to inversion we had thick fog and temperatures around freezing point for the last couple of days, and I was hungry for some sun and blue skies, I knew were lurking above the fog.

Around mid-afternoon I packed my backback and ventured out into the gloomy weather.

As I steadily climbed up, I began to convince myself that the sky started to change from pure white to be slightly blue, and so I pushed on.

And lo and behold, I managed to break through the fog barrier just in time to watch the sun go down.

Of course convincing myself to go down into the fog was not easy, and I had to use my headlamp for the last few kilometers, as it was already dark by the time I got back down into the valley.

Hiked distance: 8,2 km / 5 miles,

elevation gain: 420 m / ~1370 ft

It's all well and good to talk about making 2021 better than last year, but it's not going to be enough to just put your head down, do the bare minimum and expect things to improve. I'm right there with all of you and it starts with us. If I'm going to be the man my loved ones need, the man that I need, I have to work both harder and smarter. But I also need to be better mentally, emotionally, physically. I need the work ethic and self-confidence that comes from setting goals and meeting them no matter who or what is standing in the way. So, today I said fuck it, let's get started. This year, I'm going to go for the 52 Hike Challenge - one hike every week. To improve my physicality, my determination, my peace of mind, and to get the hell out of the house and enjoy nature in every season. When it warms up, I might incorporate live art streams into the hikes like I did a couple times last year as well. Hike #1 is the first trail I ever really hiked and became fascinated by years ago - Trail 3 in Charlestown State Park, in Charlestown, IN, 2.1 miles and rugged. Day 1 #sharethelovechallenge2020 I picked hiking! Love has many definitions the one I am using today is: to have a strong liking for; take great pleasure in. We had amazing weather last weekend and I did this hike by myself! If you know anything about me then you know I don’t do much alone. Everyone was already doing there own thing, so I went for it. I do have trouble with directions so I picked a place close, short and knew I couldn’t get lost at. It was a short hike so I went around multiple times. Each time I made sure I found something new like a tree, leaf, rock and a river. It was a great day to just be alone with nature. It brought me everything I needed that day! I have decided to join the @52hikechallenge so this is #hike1 of the #52hikecgallenge2020 I am excited to get this started and cannot wait for some more warmer weather! I do not do cold, so bring on spring and summer! My mom signed up too, so I’m excited for us to go on our first hiking adventure!
