Hikone Castle, Shiga Prefecture by A Different Side of Japan

If you're looking for a less crowded non-touristy area to go, Hikone Castle is one of them. It's just a one hour plus train ride from Kyoto! There's a garden and museum within the castle! And of course, the cat mascot which I remember seeing being swarmed by kids. 😂

The story goes that the Hikone Cat, Hikonyan, saved the castle lord, Ii Naotaka, from a lightning strike. The white cat beckons him to take shelter from the storm in a temple. Since then he's became an iconic figure of the castle, donning the Samurai helmet of the Ii Clan.

Finally made it to Shiga Prefecture! Hikone Castle is on the cute side as far as castles go, and the park around it is really beautiful (though not incredibly accessible to anyone with difficulty walking or climbing large stone steps, which is true of many historical sites in Japan). We were there at just the right time to see the samurai kitty mascot character Hikonyan 😍

I got pretty distracted by the swans. Heh.

From there, we drove to our campgrounds near Lake Biwa, which was just as beautiful as I had heard it would be.
