Something silly and out of character of Hiei in the live action of Yu Yu Hakusho is how Hiei spoke against Kuwabara's interactions with Yukina. But manga canon Hiei is the opposite.
Basically the contrast goes like this:
Live action Hiei: Stop talking to her. You'll sully her.
In the manga, it goes like this:
Kuwabara: But I can't summon my dimensional powers at will and I don't know how to use it properly!
Hiei: Yukina is in danger. Whoever will save her?
Kuwabara: OORRAAAAA LET'S GO TEAM!!!!
Hiei: He's a fool but he's our fool.
This shows how different fanon and canon are whether it's Western or Eastern and the fanon is always wrong which I think makes Hiei's support and respect for Kuwabara much more precious. Canon Hiei recognizes Kuwabara's abilities and he entrusts Yukina to Kuwabara in times of danger.
so i had an idea for hiei's dating routes and
happy valentine's day
EDIT: i redrew the kurama route last minute, here's the original post. sorry for the inconsistency :(
In the Chapter Black arc, after Hiei and Yusuke fought, Yusuke asked for Hiei's help to save Kuwabara. The Japanese and English characterizations for Hiei are VERY DIFFERENT here.
Japanese voice-over with English subtitles screenshots:
Japanese:
Yusuke: Hiei, come with me...(some dialogue about the portal)...Even if it's just until we get Kuwabara back.
Hiei: Don't try sweet-talking me. I couldn't stand hanging around with you that long. (Exact wording based on manga raw is: 甘ったれるな, そこまでつきあいきれるか which I think is better phrased as "Don't be naive, I won't go that far")
The Japanese wording here is kinda weird unless you see it as gay or at least with Hiei being "friendlier" than most people believe he can be. 😅
つきあい is "relationship" and きれる is "cut".
So it seems like Hiei was trying to break up his relationship with the team? But to even start a break up, you have to recognize there’s a relationship. Hiei, I know what you are
English dub that tried to make this scene sound harsher but made Hiei out of character:
Yusuke: Kuwabara could really use your help on this one.
Hiei: But I hate Kuwabara. You do them one favor and they think you're their best friend.
Me who watched in Japanese: Huh??? But Hiei never said that????
Lmao where is the English dub pulling this out of character dialogue from? Hiei never said he hates Kuwabara.
Hiei's refusal to help Yusuke is also colder in English. But in Japanese, it's like he's in denial that he cares about them. Even the manga doesn't have anything in the dialogue that hints Hiei hates any of his teammates. We know and understand this little man is a tsundere so him saying he hates anyone doesn't really matter but it puts into perspective how much "dere" there is in this man when Hiei is sweeter in Japanese.
Yes, I pull out my manga raws just to check English dub nonsense lmao. I'm not sure if this is my second post about this mistranslation of the English dub but I've only seen this "But I hate Kuwabara" dialogue from English dub GIFs and I had to nitpick on it because HIEI DOES NOT HATE KUWABARA. Lol. 😅
Hikuwa fic idea:
Kuwabara grows jealous of Hiei because every following tournament in Makai sounds more and more like Yusuke found a new rival in Hiei. And Kuwabara is forgotten and left out because his rivalry with Yusuke is always one-sided. He's never ever able to compare to Yusuke, or Hiei for that matter, so he's left behind by the person he called his rival.
Enter Hiei who's able to read him, his thoughts and his actions, while they're in the middle of a sparring match. Hiei gets pissed by Kuwabara's self-depreciation and suddenly uses his Kokuryuuha on Kuwabara.
Kuwabara whips out his jigentou and rips the black dragon in half because the dimensional sword can cut anything. He freaks out like, "What the fuck, Hiei? I could have died!"
And Hiei replies like, "But you didn't. And that means you're not beneath me."
Kuwabara blushes, knowing that Hiei was able to read him. That's Hiei's sweetest most sincere compliment for him ever.
Cat personality + Cat person = Hiei + Kuwabara
Haha but this cat likes to bite and shows affection with clawfuls of hugs. 😅 I love Hikuwa. 🤭
Which do you think can happen sooner, Hiei admitting he likes Kuwabara or Hiei admitting he is Yukina's brother?
Spirit detective Kazuma fic idea:
It's a complete canon-divergent alternate universe where Kazuma is the one who helps Botan retrieve the three stolen treasures. The actual detective is his father but his father is missing so the task falls on Kazuma. His father has been looking for the treasures before going off radar. The suspects are the same thieves of the treasures.
Everything is set and Kazuma is more than willing to look for the treasures so he can find his dad. The problem is one of the demons thieves is Yusuke, the boy he used to chase after. The boy who has been dead for two years.
At first Kazuma denies that Yusuke turned demon and refuses to cooperate because of this but Botan convinces him that this Yusuke could be a fake guy. Just a random demon who goes around with the face of someone he knew. This motivates Kazuma to hunt down the guy in anger.
Kazuma enters the clearing within the forest and comes face to face with the 14 year old boy that still haunts his dreams, the same Yusuke who died all those years ago, looking not a day older than when he died when Kazuma was in middle school. And turns out it's the same boy but Yusuke ran away from home after he revives as a demon. He's been looking for a way to be human again ever since so he can return home to Atsuko.
Everything pretty much runs the same way. Kazuma helps Kurama too. But major changes is how Yusuke turns demon early and how Hiei kidnaps Kazuma's father instead of Keiko. He also figures out Hiei and Yukina's siblinghood. Instead of beating all the guys up, Kazuma retrieves the treasures by offering his help and resolving their issues. Kazuma figures out Hiei wants to look for Yukina from Kurama and they help him after they save Shiori. He helps Yusuke reunite with Atsuko too although Yusuke is still unable to be human again.
All's well that ends well and Kazuma ends up with three demon simps after his ass.
