Hill Prince, the previous year's Preakness Stakes winner and Horse of the Year, had broken a bone in his right hind leg while training in January 1951. In his absence, Bryan G became the star of Meadow Stable, winning the Pimlico Special, Aqueduct Handicap, and Westchester Handicap

Noor flashes by Palestinian to win the 1950 Hollywood Gold Cup. The field also included Triple Crown winner Assault, 1950 U.S. Horse of the Year Hill Prince, and 1949 Kentucky Derby winner Ponder. None of which were a match for the great Noor.

After a championship juvenile year, Hill Prince was the favorite for the 1950 Kentucky Derby. He finished second behind Middleground, whom he defeated in the Preakness, but would lose to again in the Belmont

Despite these loses, Hill Prince was voted Horse of the Year
