Dustin didn’t leave, not right away. He simply stood there, looking down at Max with a complex frown. He’d never been the best at just talking to her, not like Lucas. Even after getting over his crush on her, she seemed just our of reach. But he was the only one here now. “I could do that but... don’t you think someone should stay with you? The buddy system is pretty important in Hawkins,” he suggested, shifting awkwardly between his feet.

Any moment he could have where it was just the two of them was great. Sure, she was a bit meaner in a group, further showing him that she was in there, he liked being with her alone. Maybe then it would lead to them talking about something other than their impending doom. “You can lead the way.” He thought back to how far they had come from having to put an out of order sign on an arcade game. “This is probably having you regret joining our party all over again, isn’t it?” He gauged the situation seeing whether she would be angry or whether she would just talk to him like old times.
