they had settled down in the county , it had only been a few months and things were still pretty amicable between the seed brothers ( and now sister faith ) and the rest of the tri-county area . john had brought cases of beer from near every local brewery in a twenty mile radius , they came in truck beds passed around and opened and enjoyed by everyone save for the youngest brother .

laughter echoed throughout the valley as people drank . any excuse for a party to liven up this quaint little township . people in the midst of poverty , or those cast out by society , those who lacked proper education it mattered not . the people of hope county for the most part , all seemed to get along .

there was no petting zoo , no bounce houses , the decorations had been mild and unassuming . a few balloons attached to long tables covered in food . a pot luck , those that had brought various dishes , some were interesting choices . hotdish ? some sort of chicken pot pie with crispy tater tots on top . buckeyes ? peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate . chicken dip , fried chicken wings , all kinds of casseroles , pasta salads , corn , vegetable plates . jacob had been with a few of the other more stoic people focusing solely on the bbq which smelled delicious !

the games consisted of pin the tail on sharky , hurk blindfolded fumbling around would try to pin a paper tail on the backside of a bent over charlemagne , john kept himself far enough away from that mess . a few beer pong tables were set up . horseshoes for those inclined but most people were just enjoying down time mingling . away from the everyday worries of wilting crops , bills and such .

it was joseph's birthday and while the elder brother was becoming more visible in the community john decided to throw this party - well more of a gathering . a meet and greet per say , though he didn't tell joseph that . however there were no sermons , no preaching . just a good time . even john himself let his guard down just a little bit and found himself more at ease then he had been since he could ever remember . it wouldn't last long , this harmony . soon their true intention would be more visible , people would become wary . angry . and rightfully so . but in this moment , all was well .
