eren and jean clashed at first because of their different views, but right after, they were willing to become friends. it wasn’t until jean became jealous of mikasa that some sort of rivalry began between them.

keep in mind that jealousy does not equal hatred! 

even though jean initially made fun of eren’s vow to eradicate the titans, he began training seriously thanks to him. annie says that it’s because he wants to beat eren, but that’s up for speculation.

regardless, jean began training seriously. thanks to eren. it’s probably because of that that he ranked in the top 10 (or as high as he did) tbh but i’m not sure i can only guess

and i’m pretty sure that jean inspired eren and vice versa! the fandom tends to forget that jean’s decision to join the scouting legion was influenced by eren as well. their relationship has developed so much that it’s wonderful

after joining the scouting legion, jean said that he wouldn’t trust or believe eren to be worthy of following as humanity’s last hope (my wording might be wrong here i apologize i have to reread the manga) if his titan ability wasn’t reliable. 

from chapter 50 onwards, their relationship development is apparent. after the scouting legion recovers eren and historia from reiner and bertholdt, eren begins blaming himself for the people who died in the mission. 

jean, instead of blaming him as well or pointing out how unreliable his ability is, snaps him out of it and supports him through it. jean even goes to say that whether or not they died in vain is up to eren.

eren then goes to say "thanks to you, i won’t be indecisive anymore" which is KEY as it demonstrates how they inspire and influence each other — as well as the character development on both eren and jean’s behalf!

following a few experiments, the reliability of eren’s titan ability seems to be getting worse and worse. he can no longer control himself, and levi is quick to point it out.

however, jean STILL trusts him, REGARDLESS of whether or not his titan ability is reliable.in the latest chapter, he even goes as far as to trust marlo because he reminds him so much of eren. 

i LOVE erejean and their dynamic is just absolutely wonderful—jean, an originally “selfish” cynic who was initially going to join the military police for a life of peace, and eren, a selfless (possibly to a fault) idealist who is willing to give up his life for the sake of defeating the titans.

the way they interact, and ESPECIALLY THE DEVELOPMENT NOT ONLY OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP, BUT THEIR CHARACTERS AS WELL completely sold me on it.

tldr: eren and jean inspire one another + jean goes from distrusting eren to completely having faith in him + they are just so wonderful for each other.
