Overwhelm threatens to take over as Lily arrives in Milan. The nerves which rampage her mind and body belong to different versions of her—the version of her who succeeded far beyond her wildest dreams at her first Olympics, the version of her which succumbed to the undue pressure she never deserved. It’s easier to accept now. Not easy. Easier. Or, Lily's experiences at the 2018, 2022, and 2026 Olympics.

Chapter Twenty-Seven
SIRIUS
"You wore your leather jacket," Remus says softly, the corner of his mouth quirked up in an effortlessly charming manner.
"I – " Sirius clears his throat, adjusts the black hat sitting low on his head. "I told you I had one."
"It is kind of chilly," says Remus, rubs his hands up and down his arms. God, he's such a fucking natural at conversation; why does it feel like Sirius is pulling teeth just to get a few words out?
"Seasonally appropriate, eh?" Sirius says, forcing a smile that feels like a grimace.
"I guess so."
There's a pause. Fuck. The smile fades slowly from Remus' face, and they're left staring at each other for a moment.
"We can go – "
"Are you sure you – "
Sirius swallows loudly, gulps like a fucking codfish. Where the fuck is his brain?
"What were you – "
"Sorry, you go – "

Chapter Twenty-Nine
JAMES
“I have a wager for you,” she says.
“Oh?”
“I’m sure you’re a decent skater –”
“–ouch, Evans–”
She continues, bolder. “But I was wondering if you could keep up with me.”
He pauses his jogging to blurt out a laugh. “Keep up with you?” he says, and – fuck, he can’t help it – runs a hand through his hair, ruffles it so he can feel the strands swoop down in the way he likes it. “I think you’re confused.”
“Am I?” She stands in front of him, hands on her hips, eyes twinkling.
“I’m a professional skater, see?”
“I hadn’t realized,” she deadpans.
But he persists. “I might not be able to do a triple axel, but I certainly, certainly will have no issue surpassing you.”
“I can’t do a triple axel either,” she says. “So clearly we’re on the same level.”
“Clearly.” Her flush has returned with a vengeance, and he’s sure his is peeking through.

“I need to tell you something,” he says, finally drops his eyes. “Something I should’ve told you a long time ago.” Equal parts of her feel dread and electric anticipation. Oh god, he’s going to reveal his crush, like he’s done any sort of job hiding it all these years. “No, James, I know what you’re gonna say.” “I don’t think you do.” Or, Superman represents hope. Lily Evans could use a little of that, as political tensions boil over, as readers of the Daily Prophet get increasingly antagonistic, but she doesn’t expect to find it so vehemently in her coworker, James. *inspired by James Gunn's 2025 Superman*

Chapter Twenty-Four
JAMES
"You've gotta keep me in check, man," says James, his mind wandering to Lily. "I turn stupid around her."
"I know," Sirius says simply, laughter in his voice.
James rolls his eyes, but lets himself laugh as well.
"For some reason she likes it, though."
"She does?" The butterflies in his stomach have made a full return, an encore to the full day of nerves he's experienced.
Sirius gives him a look. A look that says you idiot, you haven't noticed? "Poor girl, doesn't know what she's getting herself into."
"A lifetime of laughter and happiness, that's what she'd get herself into," says James.
"A lifetime, eh?" Sirius says. "You gonna marry her or something?"
Yes. "If she'd have me."
"Unbelievable." A new look this time, his mouth slightly agape as he shakes his head in (bewilderment) awe of James.
James shrugs. "I'm almost twenty-four," he says. "I'm old enough to know what I want. And I want her."
"Turning twenty-four doesn't turn you into an all-knowing being, trust me," Sirius says. "I feel stupider."
