Henny Porten ~ “Hintertreppe” (Backstairs), 1921.
okay, so i just watched this film and have added it to the ‘go-to’ list when people try to tell me that silent films are frivolous and not art. This film is a good solid purely visual storytelling, kick in the gut. Henny Porten plays the lead, she also co-produced the movie.
The film has a haunting quality that German filmmakers seem to be so good at. It has everything, obsessive love, a stalker, joy, despair, betrayal, ...and an axe.
You should see it, but don’t expect a silly film. It’s deadly serious.
