Review:
“Came a long way from the Suffolk County days” is the perfect description of Stephen Goss, AKA Cousin Stizz’s latest full-length project, Trying To Find My Next Thrill. There’s no denying Cousin Stizz’s ability to stick to his unique sound while simultaneously fitting himself into the trending sound. 2018 was indeed a busy year for Stizz, dropping two EPs: All Adds Up, and Cold Times, both of which were far from disappointing.
His most recent body of work, compared to his previous EPs, is particularly bass heavy, synth explosive and melodically satisfying. This 13-track LP is an easy listen, but lyrically strong. He tells stories of drug abuse as in ‘Meds’, his conflicting personalities in ‘Two Face’ and his affiliation to street violence in ‘Off With Ya Head!’. Simply put, Stizz sticks to his sound without boring his listeners, which is a skill that will put him amongst the greats.
Spotlight verse: “Meds” verse two:
Prepare yourself, anything happens
I seen some shit wish that I never saw
Smoking that dope, but I can't shake it off (For real)
Throw you a play, better catch it like Mars (Ayy)
Believe yourself, they ain't like you at all
You can help change the world
Lessons and blessings, know life is a pearl
They ain't gon' stop for you, time gon' twirl
(Genius)
The optimism of this verse is a true testament to the positivity that Stizz brings to the Trap genre, where grievous crimes and reckless behavior tend to take centre stage.
FTL review: 4.2/5.
