It Costs Nothing to be Nice Hoorah! The shops are reopening. Now my family have a lot of birthdays in July, so I decided to support one of my local shops that had just started trading again, and get organised with the birthday cards. Obviously shopping is a different experience now, and aside from my weekly visits to the supermarket, I haven't been anywhere else. I am perfectly versed in the current (at time of writing) 2m rule, and keeping my social distance. I also wear a mask. Shock and Hurt When I got to the card shop, there was no queue outside, and a few people inside. So I entered and started to browse. Suddenly an aggressive voice boomed forth from behind me. "If you don't follow our designated one way system I shall have to ask you to leave the premises." Turning round I was greeted by the stern face of the store manager (I think). I was taken aback a bit by her surly manner, and opened my mouth to begin to apologise. However, before I could get a word out, she added, "And while you are at it, you can use some hand sanitizer", whilst pointing at bottle of hand wash liquid. Feeling Silly Now, I admit that I had walked straight past this. It was low level and I just didn't notice it as I passed. There was a sign on it too, so I felt a bit silly. The one way system, was marked out on the floor, but again I was just heading straight to where the cards I wanted were, which were actually really close to the entrance to the shop. Hipposerve - Our Logo Story One of the most common things our customers say to us is "We love your logo, it's really cute - why did you choose that?" Like many company logos there is a simple and feel good story behind it. One of the hardest things I had to do when I was forming the company was to think up a name. I wanted something that would get across the customer centered approach I wanted to offer. I wanted a friendly face - something non technical and something that would make people smile! I explored a range of different ideas, including looking at some design companies, to come up with a brand for us. It did seem like such a lot of money though - I was at a loss. Trip to the Zoo Cut to a family trip to the zoo and my daughter, who was 15 at the time who loves hippos. We were watching the hippos swimming around in their enclosure and she stated that the business should related to these rotund, quirky animals. I asked why, and she just said - "Because they are cool!" When we returned home, we talked about the subject again, and I described the 'feel' I wanted for the company. Adobe Illustrator She is great at art - I mean really good! But she had until this point only worked with pencils and paints. Anyway, off she went to the computer and started doing some stuff on Adobe Illustrator. It must have been a steep learning curve as she had never used it before. Splendid Support

Splendid Support Splendid Support - In my many years of using a wide range of different hosting companies, the one thing that I have really valued is the support. The support offered is absolutely fundamental to a successful hosting experience. As you develop your website you will face problems. There may be a plugin that throws up an unexpected error, or you may muck up a config file and render your website useless. In these circumstances you want fast and professional support, that doesn't mock you for doing something daft.   Professional Support I remember some time ago when I made the first big step from shared hosting to a VPS server. Now, on a shared hosting server most of the complicated set up is done for you. On a VPS server you are given a lot more free reign which has its upsides and downsides. You get the ability to tweak the webserver 'under the bonnet', but you also have the ability to render it useless. Anyway, had been told that installing a specific cache package on my VPS would enhance web speed by 300%. So I went ahead and did it. Unfortunately, being new I accidentally installed the wrong package and broke the entire VPS. Being a typical bloke I refused to swallow my pride and ask for help because I thought the support team would think I was an idiot who couldn't resist fiddling.   From Bad to Worse As I tried to fix the server things went from bad to worse. I got lost in the world of Linux scripts and more of more of the VPS stopped working. In the end I finally relented and contacted the support desk. They were very understanding and respectful, and were able to take a backup of my website data, then reinstall the VPS. It took all of 30 minutes. Just 30 minutes! I had wasted hours!   Lessons Learned When things like this occur you learn a lot about your hosting environment. I also learned the value of good support. This is a value you I continue to have today and forms part of our core values for this company. I have found over the years that many of the smaller hosting providers offer services comparable if not better than the larger companies. More importantly they offer much better support. You may not get a 24/7 call center, but you will reach people who will actually care about you and your website. And that caring really matters!
