             Jo is laying down next to her sister, holding on to every moment in fear it could be the last. Beth keeps saying one of them will in fast be the last but Jo won't believe her, REFUSES to believe her. It's not enough her head screams to her, how could it ever be  e n o u g h ?  She's been selfish and petulant and nowhere near as good as they promised each other they'd be. They all were less than perfect, except for Beth. Beth's always been good, the kind of good Jo wished she could be so she wouldn’t worry Marmee.

          ❝ Shhhh. ❞  She brushes a strand of hair of sister's from her face, tries hopelessly not to cry, she doesn't want to make Beth sad.  ❝ You'll keep on loving me and I'll keep and loving you. Nothing could tear us apart, sweet Beth. ❞  Even if the unthinkable happens, even if... It doesn't matter! They'll keep on loving each other, nothing and no one can tear sisters apart, they have an unbreakable bond.

     “useful?” worry creases her brow, the same way it always does when beth speaks like this. eversince she had been so sick and then recovered, recovered and yet left seeming so rose-petal-delicate, fragile as a butterfly’s wing. “oh, beth....” she smooths her apron down, turns from the proving pans to kiss her sister’s head. “you are, and you have always been, so much more than useful.”
