Seiyū Love: Hiroshi Kamiya

The first Hiroshi Kamiya character who grabbed my attention was Mephisto from “Blue Exorcist.” Between the top hat, purple hair, and pink polka-dot cravat, he is so full of personality it’s impossible not to notice him! Then there’s his amazing voice. Whimsical, patronizing, threatening, whatever the scene calls for, Kamiya’s delivery brings Mephisto to life like no one else could.

The same can be said of Kamiya’s portrayal of Yato in “Noragami.” I was so excited to hear he had the lead, which is uncommon for character actors in dramatic series, and he did not disappoint! From coldly furious to divinely dispassionate to chirpily enthusiastic, this role let Kamiya showcase the breadth of his abilities.

Once I started looking into Kamiya’s casting history, I couldn’t help noticing he seemed to have the corner market on condescending geniuses. There’s Levi from “Attack on Titan,” Tieria from “Mobile Suit Gundam 00,” and the lead from “The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.” to name a few. The last one highlights his humor, another hallmark of his repertoire that I would never have guessed at from Tieria’s cold intellectualism. 

I’m always especially awed by performers who play roles that you would never suspect were them. That’s exactly what happened when I looked up the seiyū for Penguin in “Polar Bear's Café.” How could that squeaky, awkward Spheniscidae have the same voice actor as the intensely intimidating Trafalgar Law from “One Piece”?! How is it possible the lead’s squawking squirrel companion, Juri, from “Brothers Conflict” is the same as deadly and detached Shaun form “Children of the Whales”?!

All those different characters can only be voiced by the same performer when that person is immensely talented. His incredible range is what makes Kamiya a favorite of mine.

Mononoke Anime Movie Teaser Trailer

The official website for the Mononoke anime film unveiled a new teaser trailer and visual for the film on Friday. The trailer reveals the film's staff, 2024 summer release date, and Hiroshi Kamiya as the new voice of the protagonist the Medicine Seller.  The film was previously slated to open this year, but was delayed. Alongside the announcement of the delay in February, the film's staff also announced that Takahiro Sakurai will no longer reprise the role of the Medicine Seller as originally planned. Twin Engine stated in the notice: ...the animated film "MONONOKE" sets in Ōoku (historically the women's quarters of Edo Castle) and tries to depict the suffering and remedy of women.
