Hiroshima, Mon Amour. Directed by Alain Resnais, Argos Films, Como Films, Daiei, Pathe Overseas Productions, 1959.
Why do we forget, and why do we remember? Which things do we choose to forget? Do we just remember things by chance? Can you someday forget your first love? During the affair, did you even remember you already have a wife? Do you even remember the catastrophe that has wretched this place, fourteen years ago? Of course you do. It was all over the news. People all over the world rejoiced over it. The 200,00 deaths. The 80,000 wounded. The vanquished city. The disabled babies. The most impossibly dubious of all human things: war.
So will you remember this love. An impossible love. You’ll find it in the pages of every history book. Even physics, for it’s the terrifying genius of man.
But for this moment, I will remember it for love.
