Reading man about town interviews with Deigo calva was truly an eye opening that all aspects that we love about Teddy as a character was actually come from the decision that Diego made himself for Teddy, how much thought he put into bringing Teddy into this world not just in flesh but he made sure we would see Teddy with his soul intact. I just think we are so lucky that we got him as our teddy, I don’t think the night manager season 2 would be this way without him.
“I…ask the director if I could make the character sexually ambiguous…that was important for me.”
“I asked them to make Teddy’s room very ostentatious. I told then “he has a bed and a chair only.”…I asked for that”…
Like Diego was very specific about what he wanted to see in Teddy, down to designing the interior of his room, he put so much thought into this character.
“I think sometimes you work for the character…I am the employee of the character.” Also it’s kinda funny he didn’t think that the director was his employer lol he works for the character, his sole duty was to please the character to put justice to his character no matter what role he would play in the bigger story.
Oedipus as his reference for his arc with Roper?? 😭 nothing escaped him and his research is endless because he likes to read and write poetry as well, he is an artist through and through.
Also Teddy as the reverse version of Michael Corleone where he lost his soul and ideology while Teddy is the opposite 😭 and The one who brought soul to Teddy’s life is no other than Jonathan Pine, he is truly his soulmate, the one who brings him back to his root to reminds him that he has one.
Season 2 feels so much more personal, like we could be immersed in the story, be a part of the story instead just a bystander watching at the sidewalk, something about Teddy and Pine dynamic feel intimate even before we knew that Teddy would have redemption qualities, Diego really crafted Teddy to have depth and we are forever in debt to him for giving more background story for Teddy so he wouldn’t be a caricature or a cliche or one dimensional.
Dreading even just to think about the version of the night manager season 2 if Diego wasn’t on board if it was a different actor who followed only what was written for them on the script 😭 I mean Teddy did come to David in a dream “A boy with an expectant look in his eyes.” his first instinct when he woke up and his resolution was that boy is always going to die in his story — while all Teddy wanted was clearly to be loved, by his father…and of course by his own creator 😭
I think Diego understands this sentiment, for David Teddy might have been just a plot device, so many characters he should take care about in his story, he needs to write them in a way it would move his story forward the way he envisioned it, while for Diego, as he said, his sole duty was his character, Teddy was his employer, he worked for Teddy, so he cares for him more than the author himself did because his focus was on Teddy alone.
Diego even talk about lending his own mexican identity to Teddy so he is Mexican-Colombian in someway
It’s the way to honor Teddy in a sense he wouldn’t sound like a Mexican trying to mimick Colombian because Teddy is both and I think it’s genius and super considerate of him.
So FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART THANK YOU SO MUCH DIEGO CALVA FOR ALL THAT YOU DO TO BRING LIFE INTO TEDDY THAT CAPTURE OUR HEARTS AND MINDS, you have done tremendous job in making him feels so alive even for a moment with us, we feel his pain, his hope and his light, lucky to have you as our Teddy💕
