Gil Marverde is twelve years old and he’s having a breakdown in the middle of the lunch room.
His lunch tray is on the floor and all the children sitting in nearby tables and booths are cowering in fear, yet watching Gil like he’s their late night entertainment, entranced as he fights and kicks and tears run down his face.
Everything’s fuzzy and he can’t really remember what started it, but there’s milk staining the front of his shirt and hair and someone shoved ice down the back of his shirt.
Bewildered children and faculty alike are crowded around him, attempting to reach out and see what is wrong.
“ DON’T TOUCH ME! ” He snarls, ripping his arm away from the teacher. Later that day he has to switch classes, into the “delinquent” classroom until he learns to “behave himself” two weeks later. “ I’m not crazy! YOU’RE CRAZY! LEAVE ME ALONE! “
One of his classmates reaches out, attempting to calm him. Later, Gil will realize it will become one of the biggest regrets of his life, but right now, he sinks his teeth into his bunkmate’s wrist. Many people are screaming and the two are among those numbers.
