Joe Biden has now received more than 70,000,000 votes — the most of any presidential candidate in U.S. history.
MOST VOTES EVER???
Just think about this. The changes to our typical voting procedures did that. People could mail in ballots, vote absentee, and vote in person early across ALL STATES without certain pre-conditions being met. I know in some states, mail-in voting and early voting are well-utilized, but here? In my state? That is absolutely NOT the norm. Think about how many people were able to get out and vote at a time that was most conviennent to them. Without having to ask off work. Without having to worry about their ability to get back in time. A little less fear that they wouldn’t be counted simply because of lines and closed locations.
Obviously, the system would need a LOT of refining and improving if it were to work across the country long term, smoothly and fairly. I know many people who simply didn’t get the mail-in ballots they requested. I know we all have fears about fair counting. But what if we kept practicing?
I know we have to address gerrymandering, the electoral college, rights for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people, accessibility of polls (I got asked if I was sight impaired by an elderly pollster with such derision that implied if I had been, she would have been loathe to let me cast a balllot.) I know, I know.
But this? This could be the first step. This could be the future.
The deathnell of a movement is when a group abandons their nobler pursuits for things like base greed. (ie, trying to race riot when you literally ARE on top) Leadership is not the only ones under the spotlight here. I will say no more, but the riots were a very poor argument. There is no right to privilege without responsibility.
