Silverton Northern Caboose 1005, Silverton, CO by Tim Stewart Via Flickr: Silverton,CO (San Juan County) Freight trains commonly had a caboose at the end . In 1871, its first year of operations, the Denver and Rio Grande (D&RG) railroad had four cabooses made by Billmeyer & Small. D&RG built 84 more, similar to their design, between 1876 and 1885. Norsvin Mill, Decorah, IA by Tim Stewart Via Flickr: Decorah, IA (Winneshiek County) Vesterheim Heritage Park on Vesterheim’s campus includes 12 historic buildings in an open-air setting. The buildings depict the story of immigration, showcasing life in Norway in the 1800s and then life for immigrants in America. The park is a forested area, interspersed with glade-like openings that act as outdoor rooms. Norsvin Mill Vang, Valdres, Norway (1800s) This small grist mill (1800s) reflects the subsistence economy that drove many to emigrate from Norway. A vertical shaft and horizontal waterwheel allowed efficient use of a small mountain stream to grind grain. Knut Norsvin had heard there were no stones in America, so he brought the millstones when he emigrated. His grandson found the mill itself at the Kongslien farm in Valdres, Norway, and had it shipped to America to house the millstones. Wiggins General Store, Manatee Village Historical Park, Bradenton, FL (2) by Tim Stewart Via Flickr: Bradenton, FL (Manatee County) Our 1903 Wiggins General Store includes exhibits, Whistle Stop Gift Shop, and employee offices. King Wiggins built the store from bricks shipped in on the railroad. The store served the Town of Manatee. Wheeler County Courthouse, Wheeler, TX (4) by Tim Stewart Via Flickr: Wheeler, TX (Wheeler County) Named for Royal T. Wheeler, an early Texas jurist, Wheeler County was created by the Texas State Legislature in 1876. In 1879 the county was organized and Mobeetie (then known as Sweetwater), the only town in the county, became the county seat. A stone courthouse was erected from locally quarried materials in 1880. That structure was replaced with a wood frame building in 1888. As the area grew and its center changed, the town of Wheeler was officially designated the county seat in 1908. The wooden courthouse was moved to this site, but by 1913 it was too small to serve the county's needs. A separate building was erected on the southwest corner of the courthouse square that year to house the county clerk's office; it was enlarged in 1923. A bond election held in 1925 set aside funds for a new courthouse. The 1888 courthouse was sold to Sheriff Riley Price, who dismantled it and used the lumber to build barns on his ranch east of town. Sanders; jailer, J. M. Kezee. Built of concrete and steel. Used 20 years with only 1 prisoner escaping. Now used for library, museum and county offices.
