Davis Rumsey presents a map from Francis Amasa Walker's 1874 Statistical Atlas of the United States. The population of the southern states is majority female-- reverberations from the civil war a decade earlier. The westward expansion is also clearly visible, with its "excessively male" populace.
I can't imagine the patience required to produce a visualization like this by hand. A craft both beautiful and rigorous.
