April 20, 1809 On April 20, 1809 the Battle of Abensberg took place in Abensberg, Bavaria during the Fifth Coalition against Napoleon. The battle was fought between the Austrian army and the French army, and its allies. The Austrian army was under the command of Archduke Charles, Johann Von Hiller, Archduke Louis, and Michael Kienmayer which commanded a force of 42,000 men. The French and their allies were under the command of Napoleon I, Jean Lannes, François Lefebvre, Karl Von Wrede, and D. Vandamme; in which commanded a force of 55,000 men. Furthermore the battle was a devastating defeat for the Austrians in which ended up retreating, making this as a victory for Napoleon and his allies. This is also the second defeat on the Austrian army; in which they were defeated on April 19, in the Battle of Teugen-Hausen. Also for the next two days of April 21, and April 22 the Austrian will face more defeat by the French. The casualties in the battle for were 6,711 missing,dead, and/or captured , on the Austrian side, they also lost 12, guns. The French in other words only lost 1,107 men which were either dead,wounded, and/or captured.
