tfw u realize “All Star” was released in 1999 which means Smash Mouth’s most infamous hit is on the cusp of turning 20 years old.
“ wha ––– who ––––––– i’m , i’m sorry , who did you say you were again ? ” expression is something incredulous and heavy with skepticism . doesn’t seem like he’s from around here . well , anyway , she’d likely recognize him if he was . SAFE ASSUMPTION , then . strangers have been prone to making her nervous these days –––– whereas before she might have approached the situation with a gentler cadence , her immediate instinct now is to assume anything strange to any degree has something to do with the lab , or some official business , which is likely just as bad . no part of her entertains softer suggestions , because what tourist would ever find their way HERE unless by severe mistake , anyway ? though , to that theory’s credit , there have been probably more than a few conspiracists to add hawkins to their list of prime vacation destinations . nonetheless , nancy had grown naturally cautious , and didn’t care to give the benefit of the doubt loosely . “ are you looking for something ? ”

as comfort .
oh , his hand slips into hers . she’d been expecting it . her posture had been begging for it . he’s standing beside her , statuesque . unmoving –––– unmoved . timeless features barely betraying a hint of emotion . where rose shrinks , where standing here , watching the creature die , she loses face ; the doctor is stoic . unbroken . they had spent the day fighting to avoid this outcome : to help the little alien , to bring it to safety , to save just one . they’d failed . and it felt , standing here now , two dark silhouettes standing before a burning sun , that the doctor had always known . he knew this was going to happen . he saw it coming . he always did . his jaw was clenched , his eyes staring .
she didn’t always see him ––––– the lonely god . the one people talked about . but in these moments , the little funerals , standing repentant before those he couldn’t save , she felt the history . rose felt it not when he’d found some clever fix to a puzzle in which rose could barely see a pattern . not in the run - and - jump hugs at the end of a long day . not in the moments where they were champions , legends , heroes . but when they lost . then . then , when they returned to the tardis with heads bowed & bones aching , then he was the lonely god . the man who could feel the turn of the universe . she hated to think it , but seeing this side of the doctor almost made her heart ache worse than the loss of any creature .
she drops his hand only to snake her arms around him , face burying itself in his chest . it wasn’t clear at this point who was comforting who . after a long while , rose mumbled something unintelligible into his chest . ❝ what ? ❞ a fair question . after a resound sniff , she lifted her face and tried again . ❝ you’ve got a bit of mascara on your tie . just there . ❞
q: what does sarah think of the doctor's actions during the time war
it’s interesting to think that sarah would actually disapprove of what the doctor did back there, but i honestly think that she’d rather not think too much about it. i mean, she did visit gallifrey, & had some established ties with the people there, or just the fact that it was his home planet & her ever inquisitive nature to understand the context & the subtext of everything around her; the notion of gallifrey being “no more” (to the extent of what she knows), & the doctor being “the last of the time lords” (again, to the extent of what she knows) would be, well…i think a big part of the themes of post-cdw & sja for sarah is the whole loneliness thing, & how to deal with it; she understands being lonely & having to isolate yourself because of the things “no one would believe” that exist out there. i don’t want to say that sarah’s experience mirrors the doctor’s, but there’s some paralels that we can’t really ignore. & sarah might not know everything, but she’s big on empathy, so she sorta understands the feelings, those feelings in particular.of course she doesn’t approve, but at the same time, she understands that sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. i don’t think she lingers to much on what the doctor did, or why he did it, i think she prefers to just understand, mourn the loss & move on. it’s not like she knew she could have gone back there, & it’s not like she could have changed anything, so i don’t think she allows herself to be vocal about his actions.plus, her relationship with the doctor becomes less of “i told you not to do that” & more of a “as long as you’re alive” kinda friendship. it’s sad, but the time she spent not being around him anymore really did break her a bit, so she’s just happy that he’s still doing his thing.
@hiswakes sent me an ask about sarah jane smith, & you should too.
