Rouge, 胭脂扣 (1987) swept the Hong Kong Film Awards in 1989 with wins in the major categories of Best Picture, Best Director, Best actress and more. Leslie Cheung however, playing the male lead, missed out on a win in the Best Actor category as he didn’t have enough screen time in the film. This came as a disappointment since the filmmakers had already deliberately added more scenes for his character and more importantly, it had clearly been one of his finest performances to date.
He didn't have to wait long to secure the award though, as one year later, he stunned critics with his performance of a troubled playboy in Wong Kar Wai’s Days of Being Wild (1990).
