𝜗ৎ a/n: guyssss i can't believe this is the last part of this series💔 it's really dear to me, even tough I've neglected it a bit BUUUUT I'm super excited because I already have two new series all thought out, and one of them will be about vamp!bruce🤭🤭 my creative juices are at an all time high also, look at me posting twice in a week?? i genuinely thought this would take me much longer lol
It felt like after the holidays, Gotham turned into a worse shit show than normal. Stress was eating at you lately, which made you want to turn back these past three months and go back to last year. The ER team was down on a few nurses, so you and two more nurses from your service had to be transferred to the ER. Still, shifts were longer for the rest of you and work was tougher since there was high demand for not many professionals. It also didn't help that every Gothamite seemed to be 10 times angrier, maybe you were just sensitive but even your colleagues seemed harsher.
All to say that you were so stressed it was even causing a strain between you and Jason. You had to do almost a whole week of night-shifts back to back, and you normally worked mornings and evenings, so your routine was totally messed up and you had trouble sleeping. Jason was also going on long missions, so your communication was not at its finest. Which means he didn't know you were doing nights, which then snowballed into an argument.
You were trying desperately to sleep after dealing with assholes the whole night (you had to tend to joker's goons, yay…), when two loud voices started bickering from outside your room. It was around 10 am, so normally you'd be working at this time, but you were not. So… you exploded.
“Excuse me guys. In case you haven't noticed, you are arguing in my apartment, while I'm trying to sleep after a 12 hour shift that definitely went over the 12 hours. I need you to quiet down or get out.”
Dick looked at you with wide eyes and Jason immediately went to you. “Baby, oh my god, I'm so sorry, you didn't tell me your shifts changed.”
“I told you I was picking up extra hours and that things were tough at the hospital. You could've at least checked if I was here.”
“I know, you're right, I'm sorry.”
Dick was about to apologise too but you put a hand up. “I need to sleep, I don't want to be rude but I genuinely do not care about apologies right now.” And off to bed you went while the two of them looked like they felt super guilty.
So. That was your situation at the moment. Because of all that, you didn't think anything of your period being 2 months late (despite you being normally regular). You also didn't think anything of your heightened emotions… Or the cravings because that was your normal behaviour when you were stressed.
Today was your day off, and things between you and Jason were a bit tense after your argument. He decided to stay home to be with you and make up for the time you've spent apart, especially in the last week. But… he wasn't actually spending time with you. He was looking over some case reports on the kitchen table while you watched tv. That made your heart ache even more. You were already sad about the fact that you guys argued, but you also just felt distant from him and his family since he asked them not to visit the apartment so as not to bother you. The fact that you guys were engaged didn't help. Was he mad at you for being mad at him? Did he realise you were too much? Does he not want to marry you anymore? Oh my god, he hates you now, he must!
You got up suddenly, ready to confront him, and maybe even yell at him (because why was he ignoring you if he wasn't mad at you?)! Instead, as soon as you got in front of him and saw his beautiful green eyes looking up at you with a soft confused furrow on his brows, well… You started bawling. if Jason was confused before, now he was lost
“Oh, love…” He got up and wrapped his arms around you. “What happened?”
“I– what? Why would I… No! No, ‘course not, love.” His hand cradled your face and angled it up so you'd look at him. “What happened, ma? Why would you think that?”
“Well,” You sniffled. “We argued.”
“Yeah, but we've argued before. I would never hate you, point blank, but I especially wouldn't hate you because of an argument.” Despite the situation, he couldn't help but smile. “Plus, you were completely valid. I knew your work was taking a big toll on your mental health, and I wasn't there for you. My first mistake was not checking up on you more, guess I got too caught up with the mission, and again I am sorry.”
You stayed silent for a few seconds. “So you don't hate me?”
A sound between a laugh and an exhale left Jason. “No, I don't. I love you… more than life itself, sweetheart.” That… That made you cry more. “Shhh, it's okay, ‘m here.”
“I love you, ‘smuch Jay.”
“I know.. I know.” You ended up going to the bedroom to cuddle. After you calmed down, Jason made sure to kiss your tears away so now you were content. “Feel better?”
“Mhm. This is the stress talking, mixed with me missin’ you.”
“Are you sure it's not your period? You didn't tell me when it came last time.”
“Actually… It didn't come. It's late because of my stress.” You explained. Jason angled himself to look at you better.
“Oh, I see. How late is it?”
“I don't know, Jay. Maybe like… A month and something?”
“What!? Are you sure that's from stress? That's a long time.”
“Of course. What else would it be from?”
“I don't know… That just doesn't seem normal to me.”
You shrugged and snuggled closer to him. “It happened once or twice when I was younger during exam season, so I guess it's similar. I haven't been this stressed in a while.”
That seemed plausible enough. Comfortable silence fell over your shared bedroom, you both needed this. Just basking in each other's company seemed to soothe your troubles. But Jason kept thinking, you were having a lot of mood swings recently, and sure it could be stress, but normally you got really explosive when you were stressed. While it was true you'd never been this stressed, crying was tied to overstimulation. And now that he was thinking about it, the chocolate supply in your apartment was gone… and oh my god.
Jason sat up suddenly making you startle.
“We are so dumb.” You sat up too. “I need to go to the pharmacy.”
“Girl, what? Lay back down, I want to cuddle.” He cradled your face in his hands.
“Sweetheart, love of my life, my future wife, you're a nurse. You deal with pregnant ladies all the time. Don't you remember what happened before these past two months?”
“I barely remember what we ate yesterday.” You deadpanned and he sighed.
“The days between Christmas and New year's eve. And then the night of new year's eve.”
A smirk took over your features. “Oh, I remember alright. Maybe we could rewind those days.” Your hand was already going up his torso but he stopped you.
“As much as I'd love that, it'll need to wait.” You frowned at him but then you remembered properly.
“Oh. Oh my god, you're right.” Your eyes widened. “Babe, pharmacy, now.”
The three tests you took sat face down on your bathroom counter. You and Jason were looking at them like they were some dangerous bomb about to explode, neither of you wanted to reveal them.
“Me? You're the one that might be pregnant.”
“Ugh, you have a fair point.” Exhaling, you took one of the counter… “Oh my god.” Immediately, you reached for the other two. Three positives. “Jay!” He didn't have time to react before you jumped into his arms. “We're going to be parents!”
“We're…” Jason looked at you with a starstruck expression before kissing you silly. “Oh, I love you so much.”
The days after that became a blur of making appointments, changing your work schedule to reduce stress, and trying to figure out how to tell everyone. In the end, you two settled on waiting for the sunday family dinner.
The dining room was chaotic, as usual, and at some point Steph offered you wine, to which you politely declined, receiving a slightly confused look from her. Jason decided that moment was the best time to announce your pregnancy. He cleared his throat loudly.
“Everyone, we have something to tell you.” His arm came around your shoulders comfortingly, and he smiled fondly at you.
Everyone looked at you both expectantly and with the slightest confusion. “Well… I'm pregnant.”
The room erupted into absolute chaos. Everyone was congratulating you, well everyone except Damian. If you didn't know him as well as you did, you'd think he just looked bored, but you could tell there was some feeling similar to hurt behind his eyes. You couldn't really tell why, but you had been really distant for the past few months either way, so maybe something was going on in his life?
A few hours after dinner, the questions about how you were feeling quieted down, and conversation returned to normal, as normal as conversation got in the Wayne Manor at least. You excused yourself to go to the kitchen, when you got to the door you heard Dick and Damian's voices. It wasn't your intention to eavesdrop really, but you heard your name so…
“Dami, c'mon. If everyone could tell you weren't exactly thrilled about the news, then she definitely noticed too. I get that you're jealous–”
“Why would I be jealous??”
“Well, you see her as a mother-figure, you're scared that the baby will take the attention off of you, but that won't happen bud. I'd go as far as to say she's always seen you as her kid too.”
“That is so stupid, Grayson. I have a mother who I love very much–”
“Yes, I know that, but it's normal to have other people you look up to. I'm your father figure and you love Bruce.”
“You're not! That is stupid and you are wrong. I am not jealous of an unborn child, nor do I care about if it gets more attention, or if my room will be turned into its room– I could not care less. It's just not that big of a deal. People get pregnant all the time, so what? Also, we weren't even that close, she's just Todd's fiancée and I have much more pressing matters to care about.”
“Oh.” They noticed you were there at that moment. Damian left the kitchen, looking really mad.
“He doesn't really mean it. This is just the jealousy talking and he doesn't know how to deal with it.”
You nodded but then the sniffles came. And the tears. Stupid hormones.
“No, don't cry, please. Jason will murder me.”
“Why would I murder you? Hey– sweetheart, why are you crying?” Jason immediately buried your face in his chest. “I saw Damian getting out of here looking pissed, what did he do?”
“He doesn't. He's scared she'll forget about him once the baby comes.”
“B-but I won't. I've always seen him as my baby. I love Dami.” Jason couldn't deal with you sounding so sad. He wanted to teach that kid a lesson, but well you certainly wouldn't like that. Dick joined the hug to Jason's discontent.
“And everyone knows that, he just sucks at feelings like his dad and your fiancé here.”
They immediately started bickering and that cheered you up, yall looked so stupid in the middle of the kitchen hugging while you cried and they argued. Just the thought of that made you start laughing.
You loved being pregnant. The back pain and the morning sickness were huge downsides, but every other thing was amazing. You loved your weird cravings, feeling the baby kick, having Jason read to your belly… It was blissful. Everyone visited you once in a while, and you got told constantly that you were glowing. The only person that still didn’t talk to you was Damian. That made you feel really sad, you even cried about it on multiple occasions to Jason, but there wasn’t much you could do. He was always too busy to hang out, he even missed your gender reveal party, so that was fun…
Still, you were stubborn, and you heard through the grapevine that he won an art fair in his school and the ceremony would be held today, which was why you were now parked in front of his school. Very pregnant, and very hormonal too, so the chances you'd cry just from seeing him receive the 1st place reward were at an all-time high. Jason hadn't liked the idea since he thought Damian was being stupid, but you knew no one else would be able to show up. All his siblings were busy, Talia was in another continent and Bruce was out in space for a mission, you wouldn't let him be alone for this.
You stood by the sidelines while the ceremony was held, you clapped and cheered when he was called on stage, and cried slightly when he received a new pack of art supplies and a little golden trophy. He almost didn't notice you were there, it was right at the end. You were talking to a lady and he noticed you in the back, and at that moment he felt really dumb. Despite his attitude towards you during the whole pregnancy, and despite the fact you definitely had trouble moving around already, you still made the effort to be there for him.
The ceremony was over and everyone was leaving, you were slowly but steadily reaching your car when you heard a voice call your name.
“Hey! Wait–” You turned back to see Damian right behind you, holding his rewards. “You… You came.”
“Of course I did, Dami. When Jason told me you won 1st place and that there would be a little event to reward the participants, I immediately asked when that would be. I'm so proud of you, your painting was beautiful. Congratulations, Damian.”
He stayed silent for a few seconds while looking at you sadly, then the toughest boy you've ever met started sniffling and gently placed his rewards on the pavement to give you a hug.
“I'm so sorry for the way I've been acting.” You hugged him back the best you could, after all you were very pregnant.
“Oh, Dami… It's okay, I just.. I don't really get why you almost cut contact with me.”
He let go of you and rubbed the tears out of his eyes. “Because now that you're going to be a mom, you'll be too busy to spend time with me. We won't be able to bake together anymore, or try out new recipes, or-or just discuss school and books, and the stupid tv shows I don't like. And I won't be able to sleep over at yours anymore, because now my room- I mean the guest room, will be turned into the baby's room. And you'll just forget I exist.”
“Damian… Yes, things will be a bit different, Jay and I will be more tired, and in the beginning we won't have so much time. But I'd never ever forget about you, or all the things we do together. I might not be your mother, but oh, Dami, I've always seen you as my baby, even if we met when you were ten. That love won't be replaced by the love I'll have for this baby,” You placed your hand on your belly. “And we're thinking about moving to a house near the suburbs either way. You'll always have a place in our home, okay?”
He nodded and wiped some more tears off his face. “Its going to be a girl, right? Grayson told me.”
You nodded fondly. “We're naming her Charlotte.”
“That's pretty. I'm excited to meet her.”
“You will in no time. I feel like I'm about to burst at any moment.”
Damian laughed and picked up his things from the floor. “You will be an awesome mother. And I will be a much better uncle than my brothers.”
“Hm, I'm sure you will. They say that too though, just so you know.”
Cathy was crawling around the floor, giggling as Damian crawled after her. You were sprawled out on your new couch reading while Jason prepared dinner, the sound of baby giggles and laughter filled the room and your heart, then suddenly in the midst of all the baby blabbering…
“Da..dami.. Dami!” Both you and Damian gasped at the same time.
“Oh my god. That's her third word!” At the sound of ‘word’ Jason came running.
“Third word? Did Cathy speak?”
“Dami! Dami, Dami, Dami.” She kept repeating herself and giggling. Damian picked her up and spun her around.
“That's right! I'm uncle Dami, Cathy. Well done.” The fondness in his voice melted your heart.
“I can't believe her first words were dada, mama and dami.” You looked at Jason.
“Excuse me. Her first words were mama then dada, not the other way around.”
In the middle of your bickering with Jason, and the giggles from your baby and from Damian, you felt something wash over you. Peace. And in that moment, surrounded by the people you loved the most in the whole world, you couldn't see how life could ever get better than this.
