My son and I started de-junking this basement mess last summer - and then took a long pause because he was very much overworked at school. Last week we got back to it. Mostly him, actually; I got him started and then left him to it. I need a new picture; it looks SO MUCH better, now. He has gotten over halfway back (and also some stuff that was behind me when I took this photo. Good thing we have a dumpster. I went to look at his progress this evening, and I was so happy.
Also, he found a big glass jug labeled - no, not moonshine - “sulfuric”. I. Uh. I don’t know what to. Do with a gallon. Of concentrated sulfuric acid. ?? !
Welp. This truck is delivering a huge scrap metal dumpster. That whole red part on the back is to be set my my late father's workshop and all the accumulated rusty junk will be put inside (our job) and hauled away. Say "Goodbye," rusty farm equipment! Old drainage pipes, bent up livestock chute! Various worrisome empty (we hope) tanks!
My husband is setting aside a few 'interesting' pieces that he thinks can be upcycled in some way, but a LOT of it will be gone - and I'll be relieved. Son busted his butt all week getting extra mowing, tree pruning, and weedwhacking done so that we could access all this stuff. Yesterday evening I was his 'spotter' as he set the step ladder in the bed of the pickup (to get as much height as possible) and took down tree limbs that were in the way of the tractor. I watched with my heart in my throat, but it all went fine. No matter how old he gets, I guess I'll never stop worrying about him!
I have been doing small amounts of cleanup in this room, just a bit at a time so I don’t get overwhelmed. Over a year ago I donated a whole shelf of lovely, hardbound, outdated encyclopedias to the high school art department for use in deconstructed-kinda art projects . I pulled two large storage boxes full of books out of this shelf that were outdated science/political/diet stuff - things nobody could use as a reference anymore but not old enough to be historically valuable. There’s a whole shelf of vinyl records, and an old friend of my brother’s has volunteered to help us sort out what might be valuable and sell it (downstate in the urban area). I need a step ladder and - much more work on the left side of the fireplace.
Discard pile:
Not pictured, but there’s a big totebag to go to the nearest book exchange.
I also had to locate the cable box so I could return it to the company. Somewhere in this mess.
Each - THING - here has multiple cords; some attaching them to each other, some going to two different power cables, and some - mysterious? All dusty or grimy. The helpful cable lady gave me a serial # to look for so I’d know when I found the cable box. I felt absurdly triumphant when I’d identified it and unplugged all three cables/cords. *Loud Tarzan Yell*!!
I get to take the rest of the day off, right? RIGHT?!
It’s been two months since I did any de-junking down at my late father’s house. Took the summer off, and it’s probably for the best. But today my son and I went down and filled several large contractor’s garbage bags from one of the basements*. It didn’t take very long, and we threw them plus some larger trash items that didn’t need bags in the Infamous Dumpster. I sorted out a few flea market type items someone might want, and a walker that my father was given after a back injury, but refused to use. Someone told me that the local Lion’s club will take donated medical items in good condition, so we can probably get rid of that.
Looking at the remaining mess, it’s hard to note that anything was removed - but a few more sessions and we’ll have it in better shape. Son has a light class schedule for Thursdays, so maybe we can have a standing appointment for junk removal. I feel like I’m READY to get back
I also made a business phone call that I didn’t want to make, but the receptionist I spoke to was very nice and I’ll probably have a new CPA soon to help with the estate and tax issues my current tax preparer has not been able to help with. Then I just need to call her and get her to do One Last Important Thing. I’m so tired of tax/bill/estate/finance issues. Maybe one day it will be over?
* Due to the haphazard construction of the house over seven decades, there are three separate odd-shaped basements. All dark, dank, and filled with junk. And bugs.
