Look at this. Look at this fucking ask.
I know there are a lot of you out there amongst the tumblrers that are afraid of comic book stores. I understand - it's a perfectly legitimate worry. There are certain assumptions about comic stores that, sadly, sometimes ring true. Here's a story:
When I walked into my first comic store, about four and a half years ago, the owner took one look at me and my girl and said, quite confidently 'Oh. You must read Buffy comics.' Literally the only basis he had for this assumption was that I am pretty obviously physically female. That was it. I don't read Buffy comics. I don't like Buffy comics. I want superheroes punching other superheroes.
So I didn't go back. Thank god, six months later, Comic Envy opened in Asheville, NC. I've never been in a more friendly, happy, welcoming place. I work there now. The owner and his family are my family. We went and saw Rise of the Guardians (SEE IT) with him and his kids this past weekend. When our car fell apart, they loaned us money. When my grandpa died, they were there for me. I spend more time in my comic store than I do in my own house.
I am so, so very happy to hear that you have a good relationship with your local comic store. It's one of the most precious things you can have. I urge all of you, if you have had a bad experience in the past, ESPECIALLY if you have, give it another go. It's the best choice you will ever make. It's how I found my family :)
