important to my reading of hob is that he IS three guys who are one guy, but it's irreversible. he doesn't reveal a true form (or three) bc kp hob is his true form. those three goblins who wanted to be something more, transcend their bodies to create something -- someone -- new, cannot come back.

watching the way goblins die, and die fast, you can't help but imagine them sacrificing their bodies on their own terms, to persist in the dissonant, overly structured thoughts and values of a body that was designed to survive the court and its demands. kp retains the echoes of their intentions, but the body they made him and the life he now leads are his to command. no wonder he gave himself so thoroughly over to honor.

prev reblog this is also something house of black does pretty often - acting "worse"/more cruel/etcetera than someone who either needs a big push or whose status is a bit uncertain

if you want to put a newish babyface over, have them run the house of black gauntlet - if they win they look cool as fuck, if they lose they get a massive sympathy vote because they got killed by monsters

if you have a guy whose reception with the fans is a bit muddled or lukewarm or confused or starting to turn cold, again, set house of black loose on them - malakai was working his ASS off trying to rescue cody rhodes' image in 2021 because the fans were freezing him out and the hope was that an almost cartoonishly evil villain opponent would help right the course (it didn't quite work, but i see the vision)

- in this instance adam cole is in a similar spot. he's a bit rusty and uncertain and isn't ready to wrestle with the top of the top card yet, but he can go up against some vile little creatures who'll bully him into shape. there's a reason buddy got increasingly cruel and disrespectful as the match continued, and there's a reason "the new adam cole is a little bitch" was the incident that lit a fire under adam's ass, because the attempts to sell the sympathy vote of his injury wasn't quite translating to the live audience (regardless of how it may have looked to those of us watching at home)

if you have a guy who has big aspirations and wants to step up his game in aew, put him against someone from house of black - if he loses it's a fire under his ass to regroup and do better and keep fighting, and if he wins he's proven that he can compete with some of the scariest monsters aew has (this is, in many ways, part of the brody king/darby allin dynamic)

they're the testing ground for people who need to step up, and they're often the attempt at a course correction for people whose gimmick isn't translating or going over well with the live audiences, and in light of that i think it's very deliberate that they're adam's first opponents on his return

thinking about house of black entering their "wait a minute, no one can beat up darby allin except us" era and ending up in about 5 different feuds as a result

thinking about darby accidentally-on-purpose falling into the role of their morality pet

the reason i know malakai is metaphysically a cat while brody and buddy are metaphysically dogs: malakai holds all of the impulse control and most of the malice but buddy/brody have the killer instinct that is activated by squirrels and smaller dogs and are always soooo happy when malakai takes them to an off-leash park

tal and i talking about this but every time malakai or HoB gets involved in a high-stakes situation or a main event type match it gets very well received! people really like them! just put them in the ring with ospreay and/or ricochet already we already know there'd be excitement for it and it would literally be all you need to support a big push for malakai + his guys yk
