On January 22, the Hoegh Osaka returned to Southampton after it had been stranded/disabled for three weeks. The car carrier had been laying on its side with a 52 degree list since January 3. The Hoegh Osaka refloated four days later on a high tide, but it took another 19 days until a salvage team was able to re-right the vessel. Delays due to heavy winds and storms kept the vessel on its side while anchored off Lee-on-the-Solent. It’s cargo of 1,200 Jaguar and Land Rovers, Mini and construction equipment will be inspected.

Water pumped from stricken cargo ship in salvage operation
Water has started to be pumped from a sea carrier which became stranded next to a busy shipping lane, helping to slightly reduce its list. Heavy winds have caused delays to the salvage operation to pump water from the Hoegh Osaka and re-right it. The 51,000-tonne ship, which has a cargo of 1,400 cars and 105 pieces of construction equipment, was beached deliberately on Bramble Bank sandbank, near Southampton, on January 3 after it began listing as it left the Hampshire port.
The ship continues to be stable and the salvors' ongoing ballasting operations have now reduced the list to 48 degrees. The divers yesterday successfully carried out a limited inspection of the Hoegh Osaka's hull [and] indicated that there is no significant damage.

It floated free from the sandbank on the high tide on January 7 and has since been anchored at a spot two miles east called Alpha Anchorage, near Lee-on-the-Solent. Last Saturday, one of the tugs helping to keep the ship in place collided with the vessel and had to be replaced. A Marine and Coastguard Agency (MCA) spokeswoman said an inspection by divers had found no significant damage and ballasting operations had helped improve the list.

This week has been dominated for me by the grounding and significant listing of the 51,000 ton car carrier Hoegh Osaka just to the north of Cowes on Brambles Bank, a shallow hazard in the middle of the Solent and the approach to Southampton docks.
I was duty launching authority for Cowes Lifeboat Station at the time… just after 21:00 and phoned the Coastguard upon being paged. To hear that we were requested to aid such a large ship prompted me to think that we needed a bigger boat (!), but three other lifeboats were already on their way, so of course I asked them to page the crew and we would launch.
The rest of the night was somewhat surreal… full on rescue drama, involving the aforementioned four lifeboats, two rescue helicopters (one Coastguard and one RAF) and two large tugs. In the end, 25 ship’s crew and pilot were successfully rescued by helicopter and/or from the water by lifeboat.
Hoegh Osaka remained on the sandbank until starting to drift on a high tide later in the week (already attended by salvage vessels) and has now been moved across the Solent to a safe anchoring ground (still dangerously listing).
Official paperwork and media interest/interviews has somewhat abated now (I’m glad to say) and hopefully there will be a happy outcome for the eventual salvage of ship and cargo (Land-rovers, Minis and JCBs)

Salvage experts to pump 3,000-tonnes of water from stranded car carrier ship
Salvors are hoping to begin pumping 3,000 tonnes of water which have been taken onboard a car carrier which became stranded near to a busy shipping lane. The Hoegh Osaka was beached deliberately on Bramble Bank sandbank, near Southampton, last Saturday after it began listing as it left the Hampshire port. The 51,000-tonne ship, which has a cargo of 1,400 cars and 105 pieces of construction equipment, floated free from the sandbank on the high tide on Wednesday.
The vessel has been held by an anchor on the Alpha Anchorage overnight. Weather conditions on scene have eased and the salvors boarded the vessel at 8.30am to prepare for the removal of water from the vessel. This lengthy operation is expected to get under way today and continue during daylight hours over the weekend.

It has since been anchored at a spot two miles east called Alpha Anchorage near Lee-on-the-Solent. Salvors Svitzer have boarded the vessel again today to prepare for the removal of the water which Hugh Shaw, the Secretary of State's representative for maritime salvage and intervention, (Sosrep), said had a film of oil on it from the vehicles in the cargo but did not currently pose a pollution risk. A Marine and Coastguard Agency spokeswoman said divers were waiting for calmer weather conditions to inspect the hull for damage.
Because of the weather conditions on-scene divers are still waiting to carry out a further inspect of the hull. They are standing-by and will dive as soon as conditions permit. There is no evidence of pollution.
