Joe couldn’t find it in himself to speak Kai’s name in those final moments. He was doomed to die as he was, voted by the majority. He doesn’t know how the homemaker turned out and, frankly, he isn’t sure he wants to know. The Organization is terrifying and to have someone who admitted to knowing information about the death game here now...

( He buries his nails into his palms and breathes. The world feels like it’s moving in slow motion and Joe picks up his feet, trudging through quicksand to get to the man. )

“ Kai--! ”

He doesn’t mean to sound so angry when calling out, but it’s difficult to keep it under wraps. After all of the suffering Sara’s gone through for months since noticing him, Joe...

( Joe can’t let him know Sara is here. There’s no chance in hell he can allow her to hurt more. )

Upon rushing up and catching his breath, Joe pulls back his shoulders and puffs out his chest.

“ We need to talk. Now. ”

If finding Joe here had actually been a blessing of sorts while finding Sara was a curse, then seeing the homemaker in this foreign city was somewhere in the middle. His presence brings Sou no real joy, as he still wasn’t totally convinced that Kai was truly an ally. Even outside of the game, he can’t shake the paranoia from the edges of his thoughts.

But this was a second chance at finally getting the information they had all sought before. Nevermind that logic told Sou it wasn’t necessary anymore, constantly reassuring him that he was finally free, because he couldn’t really believe that. Not when something still yet unknown had brought them here; not when that unknown could still bring them all back.

Nevermind that the homemaker probably didn’t know much more than he at this point. If the note from the laptop was to be believed, Sou actually knew more about the game — but he wasn’t really sure it was something he could believe.

( Nevermind that the two of them hadn’t parted on the best of terms; for once, Sou’s lies had paved an escape for him, and he musters all the energy of the frail and innocent man that the other participants had thought him to be, one who was just unfortunate enough to be caught alone with the laptop at the wrong time. )

His hand rubs gently at the back of his head, fingers gently brushing against the sore spot that had long since healed. Maybe Sou could sweep the antagonism aside for the cause, but he didn’t have enough of a read on Kai to know if he would do the same.

Not that any of that mattered. He shouldn’t know the culprit at this point, and regardless of his own feelings, Sou needed to keep his cover in front of Sara, in front of Joe — which means he needed to keep it in front of Kai as well. So he tucks away his frown and all his hesitation and picks up the pace to meet the homemaker once more.
