Dad

I can remember, speeding through the dark near Holme Moss. That road on the side of the hill. It was dark, clumps of trees could be made out like damp stains across the valley. The headlights shone on the cat’s eyes, guiding the way. Occasionally, the bollards would pop up to show us where the edge of the road was, but mostly we were on our own. Dad sped through the twists and turns, jolting across the lanes, cutting corners. Got to get home, it’s late.  I remember being excited, like a roller-coaster. One wrong move and we’d tumble down that hill, no crash barriers. But I could still drop in and out of sleep, long blinking yawns. Dad was driving. I felt safe.
