Former Ireland captain, Roy Keane has announced that he is to vote yes in the upcoming Irish marriage equality referendum on May 22nd. The Rep. of Ireland assistant also said that he has questioned his sexuality at various times in his Manchester United and Ireland career. In a frank and surprisingly open interview with Eamon Dunphy [âŠ]
Republic of Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane urges Ireland to vote YES in the upcoming marriage equality referendum.
Omg, this is so unexpected. Iâm laughing. What a whiff of fresh air after all the âdonât redefine marriage/next step: incestâ (??), âsurrogacy? vote no!â, âchildren need both a father and a mother!â and more questionable expressions of opposition Iâve encountered around here recently.

Tony Benn: âI have put up several plaques - quite illegally, without permission; I screwed them up myself. One was in the broom cupboard to commemorate Emily Wilding Davison, and another celebrated the people who fought for democracy and those who run the House. If one walks around this place, one sees statues of people, not one of whom believed in democracy, votes for women or anything else. We have to be sure that we are a workshop and not a museum.â

Dad
I can remember, speeding through the dark near Holme Moss. That road on the side of the hill. It was dark, clumps of trees could be made out like damp stains across the valley. The headlights shone on the catâs eyes, guiding the way. Occasionally, the bollards would pop up to show us where the edge of the road was, but mostly we were on our own. Dad sped through the twists and turns, jolting across the lanes, cutting corners. Got to get home, itâs late. I remember being excited, like a roller-coaster. One wrong move and weâd tumble down that hill, no crash barriers. But I could still drop in and out of sleep, long blinking yawns. Dad was driving. I felt safe.

Workington AFC 1 v 0 FC United of Manchester:
This was one of the nicest defeats ive ever witnessed. The reason i could enjoy it, was down to a headed goal on the previous Tuesday night. We could have been travelling to Workington needing a win. That wouldve been awful. Instead it was a trip out as champions. And what a trip out!
Its not all been positives this season. The manager came under huge criticism on the genuinely awful FC facebook page after a slow start to the season, A Fine Lung faced false accusations around the donation it made to the club, someone spent over 100 quid on a âlove united, hate politicsâ flag (fortunately it only appeared once), and a far-right candidate stood for the board. Yet crowds have been growing once more, the ground is almost finished, an LGBTQ group formed, we managed a number of decent looking tifos, and we had a great season on the pitch. Margy âtook us far as he couldâ in giving us a great run in the trophy and securing us 1st place in the league.
So on Saturday we all waited for our buses. Not one bus, but two. The Lung bus, with plenty there who had drifted away from football in recent years, and a whole bus for The Giddys. The group had taken its first steps last season with a couple of people with a common interest. Gradually its pulled more in, got new people going to games and reached a certain level of organisation. We wont be going up every season, so we need stuff like this to keep matchdays interesting regardless of footballing success or lack there of.
So in convoy we headed off to the Lake District. Barring getting the coach briefly stuck, the drive passed with little incident and we soon found ourselves at a co-op pub called âThe old Crownâ. We spent dinnertime drinking there, and then headed over to Workington with the intention of making kickoff. Sadly the journey along narrow lanes meant we missed the start. Workington had put up a sign at the turnstiles congratulating us on our promotion, a very nice touch when you bear in mind we had just pipped them to it.
Once inside the lovely ground, we set up our flags etc and the rest of the match was spent singing, drinking and waving scarves and flags. Ive got to be honest, the match was poor and i noticed little of it. As soon as the final whistle finished, the trophy emerged and the players came over to celebrate with us. The closeness between team and fans has been another highlight of this season, and this day was no exception. The players sang songs, and waved banners and flags.
Afterwards we got back on the bus, and headed to an old farm (via Flimby where they make New Balance shoes) which is now a brewery (its called Tractor Shed). I gulped down pints of Helles to quench my post-match thirst and sat on the hill, enjoying the remaining sunshine and the views. Meanwhile below me, the others had an impromptu kickabout in the yard. It was the perfect end to a great season. Beer, progressive football and friendship. This thing of ours!
