Part one: A perfect day of pastries and tea
You wake up, feeling lazy. You yawn as your pour your cinnamon cereals into a bowl and think what should you do for the day? Hence, it was perfect timing that your cousin asks if you care to have some croissants – the croissants he mentioned that you have to try. So, off the two of you go, pastry hunting.
Here is how your day goes. You hop into the car and take a ride to Carlton North to buy the best croissant you had in months at the hole-in-the-wall counter of Monfort. But hey! Croissants are breakfast pastries at most. To make a brunch of it, you need something. Technically not more pastries but that is exactly what the two of you do.
Another car drive down to Northcote and you pop into Holy Sugar, a café with a homely feel of wood, some antiques and a display of amazing cakes. They all look good and you are spoiled for choice. In the end, the both of you choose to compromise. You can’t have all but you can have more than one – we walked out with four. We tell ourselves it will be shared by four people. The croissants PLUS pastries won’t look that much once you divide it by four.
So why four when only two headed out? Simple, my cousin drives us to his girlfriend’s café Tamago. Tamago is a Muji styled café that serves homely Japanese cooking and of course coffee. You get there and said cousin, is expertly churning out dish after dish for it WAS crowded. So it was a little embarrassing to be finding a table to eat pastries NOT from Tamago, hence, to be a proper patron you grab a drink and an onsen egg because how can you eat at Tamago and not have well, an egg?
Check out the individual reviews of Monforte and Holy Sugar. Would love to review Tamago as well, but embarrassingly I only ate her onsen egg which was good.
