On a warm day like today, having this at home would sure come in handy. (Art by ________________). #thegreatoutdoorsurbanstyle #poolenvy #homedecor #ifonly #cribs #photography #refreshing #theresnoplacelikehome #art #homedreaming #luscious #coolingoff #inviting
We finally started actually talking about the idea of getting the inherited house fixed up so we could move there. It is not in livable shape right now. We were hoping to get all of the big things taken care of, move in, then address the smaller and less obvious stuff. The estimate, though, is over twice what our budget can handle (we’re NOT going to change that much about our situation without having as big a safety net as possible.)
Looking at the estimate (and I know we should shop around, but that seems daunting when it’s five hours away, and we’re using my Uncle as the go-between, so he recommended this contractor he knows and has worked with), if we ‘just’ get work on the plumbing/water supply, bathroom (hello, rotten floorboards), electric, and disposal of things (like the carpet, which is alarming, and not in a ‘ha ha out of date’ way), it would be half our budget, and that would still leave so much more to fix...which would, theoretically, be easier to do if we were living there already. If we could find jobs to keep paying for things--it’s not the most economically vibrant area...but that also means that cost of living is fairly low. (And, if the place were in a bit better shape, we very well might be there already, fixing up the rest ourselves while living there.)
And we honestly can do a lot of it. We’ve both dealt with drywall, and the painting thereof. I’ve helped install cabinets. Husband knows how to do wiring. He’s installed entryway doors, too, and we don’t think replacement windows would be too far removed from that. But things like structural problems? We don’t even know about. If we were there, though, we could shop around for contractors, get one thing fixed at a time, go easier on the budget. (The house has a horribly inefficient heating system, too, but it does work, at least--would like to get it replaced with a forced air system, but that’s what that Uncle does, and his part of the estimate was...well...higher than the internet says it should be.)
This is all very circular and frustrating and there is so much uncertainty but the idea that if it could work, then we would live someplace we owned outright, with no rent or mortgage... *sigh* What a dream.
