So, this is my third time hearing someone claim, "it was the way I was raised. I've lived in small town Vermont" for their homophobic and narrow-minded views. Psychologically speaking it does take nature and nuture to make up who a person is. Basically, who you are is influenced by your genetics and the way you were raised. So, yes, your home environment and hometown/states/country does have an influence on who you are as a person. I can't help but think that you do have some say outside of that. You can make the decision to be more open-minded than your parents. You can chose to not be an asshole. If you can chose to hate views you deem morally wrong, even if your parents vote. You have a choice in being different from your parents or those around you.
Story time.... I was raised in an upper-Suburban neighborhood to conservative Christian parents. Yet, right now I am an extremely Liberal "pop punk" kid, who rejects the Suburban lifestyle and Christian religion. I was raised religious, yet I've always known that I have a choice in the life I want to live. My life is not my parents. I know I'm not the only one who has different views than there parents, and no it's not easy to do so. But it's possible. Like I stated above, you have a choice in being different from your parents or anyone around you. You may be ostracized for it, hell, people may hate you for it. But fuck them.
