Social Studies Standards 2.1.3 Describe people and events associated with national symbols, landmarks, and essential documents 2.1.5 Describe how the achievements of famous Americans, of the past and present, changed society Students have been learning about the Harlem Renaissance and writing ekphrastic poems inspired by artists from the era. We wrote poems inspired by musician Louis Armstrong, painters Romare Bearden and Lois Mailou Jones and poet Langston Hughes. Students wrote poems using descriptive language, personification, onomatopoeia, five senses and substitution. After completing their poems, they compiled their work into books with a watercolor cover. At our end of the unit poetry party, each student had an opportunity to read a poem to the class and share their books with each other.

Students in Ms. Grace’s 2nd grace class learned how to use descriptive language while writing poems about different bodies of water, i.e. ocean, lake, pond, river, bayou. We compiled our poems into accordion books to put on display.

In 3rd and 4th grade, students have been applying their knowledge of various elements of poetry while writing ekphrastic poems. Ekphrastic poems are poems written about or inspired by other pieces of art. In 4th grade, students wrote poems related to their Social Studies unit on Mardi Gras. In 3rd grade, students are studying the history of Louisiana and the effects of hurricanes on our coast. We looked at local New Orleans’ artist Terrance Osborne’s series of paintings called Hurricane Solutions and wrote ekphrastic poems about his art work. The poems here show the diverse ways students have implemented their understanding of various elements of poetry.
