I’m afraid there’s not much to elaborate upon; I just had very controlling parents who decided the best way to keep me under their control was to homeschool me. I loved my performing arts magnet school that I went to for 6th grade, which I went to for the drama program and was placed in advanced classes for– but they decided it made me ‘too dramatic’ and also too ‘death obsessed’. Because I was a teenager, and liked to wear black. They put me into the normal zoned school for the start of 7th grade, pulled me out as soon as the paperwork was done, and I stayed home and under their constant supervision until I graduated high school and moved out.
I was told at the time that I had a choice to be homeschooled, but really there wasn’t much of another option, when my experience at the zoned school involved me being beat up and in fights, usually accompanied with slurs that noted I was in the racial minority at that school.
I will say, if this pops up for anyone who is thinking about homeschooling their own kids, it isn’t terrible by default, and my experience is not universal, but please please make sure they are socialized in some other way, to replace the time spent at school with peers. I spent years not leaving the house, and when I moved out, I had not spoken to a person of the opposite sex that I wasn’t related to since before I had gone through puberty. This led to a very shitty adjustment period that I would not recommend to anyone, and decision making based anxiety attacks and xenophobia and agoraphobia that still plague me to a certain extent to this day.
