The best part of the school year is right now: planning it. Choosing themes, co-ordinating museum visits, nature walks, art discoveries, and reading lists.
We did some classics and Canadian authors last year. This year I think we'll explore genres, and try to organize a tour of the library's main branch for the teenagers.
With reading this year will come writing, which my oldest will love (she's on AO3 this year), and my middle kiddo MIGHT like. The youngest will probably hate it, at least at first. I'll sweeten the pot with fancy pens and cute notebooks ;)
But math and science are the two tricky ones. Might need a tutor there at some point. The Big Book of Home Science Experiments will come in handy this year. And things will no doubt get messy.
Will also scope out after school activities at the library, boys and girls club, and the Y. The teens are especially feeling the need to get out and "do stuff".
So: Authors By Genre. Suggestions?
For Fantasy I have Gaiman, Pratchett, Eddings and Zelazny (I may be biased by those, tbh)
For Horror I have Stoker, Shelly, King
Sci Fi would be Asimov, Duane(Star Trek is required reading), Heinlein
I'd like at least one Philosophy, some comedic authors, some parodies, historical fiction and non-fiction.
All books suitable for ages 13 and up.
For the Young One, we will stick to his specific interests for now in order to encourage reading.
