You had a window in your room.
Let me rephrase that. You had a large window in your room, one that showed everything to the trees in the back of your house. The woods surrounded your neighborhood, and no one was ever really back there, so keeping it open full time was commonplace. Seeing the light in the morning helped you get up early, after all.
You would never think about who could be watching you. What could be watching you. It was a quiet town, kids played in their front yards and the adults around watched them. Nobody would just stalk by your window and stay there for no reason, right?
..right.
Every day after you showered you went into your room to dress, the natural light outside already dimming, sometimes completely gone, leaving dark trees and the moon shining to signal nightfall. Who would be out there at such a time? You laughed to yourself a little if you thought about it too hard, amused by your own overthinking, ridiculous.
Not that you tried to expose yourself so prominently, but you did do what others might say was unsafe or uncouth. You stripped your towel from your body after drying off and dressed in your sleep ware right in your room, right there by your window.
And then you were dressed, and then you were turning off the lights, and then you were in bed, asleep, as the moon watched you.
The moon, and something else.
And who would blame them, really, when you put on such a pleasant show?
Just for them, they thought. No one else would see you like this, but them.
So that’s why one night, when you left your window open ajar so that the cool wind could enter your room… it assumed this was an invitation. Finally. A formal, “welcome”.
And when they entered your room, your sanctuary, somewhere so personal for you, they felt so utterly alive.
When it approached your bed, it’s excitement was washing over itself in waves.
It was done looking through the window.
